New to combi-boilers

    Hi al

Apologies if this is a stupid question. I have just moved into a new apartment with a Glowworm 38cxi combo-boiler and have never used one before. I have been reading the manual thoroughly but just wanted to check I understand the concept / how it works correctly.

There are three main controls/dials - a central heating one (marked 0 to 1) and a hot water one (three settings: no-preheat, pre-heat and very hot) , and a mains reset switch.

    This is my understanding:

I leave the mains/reset switch on all the time as this essentially allows power to the boiler (it is currently off as the former owners obviously turned it off when they moved out).

I can leave the water heating setting at the eco level (around 55 degrees with preheat) permanently and this will allow me to use hot water for a show for example whenever I want without having to use the central heating. Or does the central heating control also need to be on when I want hot water?

Whenever I want to turn on heat to the radiators I use the central heating setting - turn it on and increase to the temperature level I want.

If somebody could confirm that I am on the right track that it would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance :)

No central heating is off, power is on, then when you open a hot tap, the draw of water signals to boiler to fire to give you water

They also have hot water priority built in, so if it's doing the central heating, once you open a tap, it moves to hot water mode, then when you close the tap it gets back to the central heating for you.

That's amazing DGOBS - thanks for the explanation, even I understood it! Makes sense now.

    Thanks again :)

You might want to check when it was last serviced - so you'll be warm n toasty come winter time

The service needs to be done by a registered gas engineer - too many people chance it
