    You generally need to be referred to a psychiatrist by a GP, so your first step should be to contact your local one & request a referral.

    Exactly. You don't want an academic-type psychiatrist, you want one with years of clinical experience. OP go to your GP first to see what sort of care you need and then go from there.

    No I really mean psychiatrist. So I'll tell my friend to go to the GP first.

    A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialised in psychiatry, after qualifying as a general medical doctor. She or he will have a LOT of study under their belt, and a hell of a lot of clinical experience, but probably won't have an MD (the medical equivalent of a PhD).
