Part Worn tyres.....so dangerous

Just had a very lucky escape when the thread 'skin' peeled off a part worn tyre. It had been fitted for just 6 weeks, looked perfect when I bought it in Red Cow Tyres.
It looked like a skin of thread had been attached to a very old tyre.

Did you let the sales place know about this happening, sounds dangerous alright.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,336 ✭✭✭wendell borton

Sounds like a remould rather than part worn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,565 ✭✭✭K.Flyer

That was a common problem years ago with poor quality "Re-Moulds", the thread section could sometimes peel off just as you described.

As with new tyres, don't buy a brand of used tyre you've never heard of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

    If that's the case, it's a remould not a part-worn.

    Or a part worn remould

Definitely a remould and not a part worn.

Go back to the place you bought them and demand a new non remould tyre (unless you knew they were remoulded when you bought them )

Throw up a pic of it.

Tyres and brakes - no places for taking risks.

Absolutely. That's why a good, branded part worn has a place for those on a budget.
Its certainly better than running on dangerously worn tyres or crap new tyres.

All aboard! The latest iteration of the new/used/partworn/chinese debate is about to take off (again)

you can buy "re-threads" new here which are essentially remoulds. they are pure cr@p imo

The brand name on the sidewall is irrelevant if it's a remould.

Any remoulds I've ever seen have had new branding moulded on.
They usually replace the sidewall and the tread,

Apparently remoulds aka rethreads are very common on commercial vehicles. I've occasionally seen strips of de-laminated tyre strewn across the road.

I've seen them on cars too. A false economy Imo.

they seem to wear and develop cracks very quickly.

Lads, for commercial tyres its a bit different.
The likes of Bridgestone Dunlop Goodyear etc retread their truck tyres.
It makes environmental and financial sense.

Anyone else remember the band Fit Kilkenny and the Remoulds?

Hmmmm. That must be what was put onto my mondeo a couple of weeks ago. Just didn't feel right and the grip was definitely poorer than the dunlops. I haven't driven in a week, but was thinking of getting proper tyres put on when i can drive again. I think the tyres were coming in from Germany and were only €30 a corner. I got front tyres done.

Massive difference in price of remoulded for trucks. On the bin trucks they only last a few months anyway and there's 8 drive and 4 steer tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Plus they're designed to be remoulded whereas passenger car tyres aren't as such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,352 ✭✭✭alias no.9

I have it in my head that remoulds are illegal on passenger cars, us that correct? Either way, passing remoulds off as part works is sharp practice.

There is a lot of confusion on tyres
New tyres are what then say on the tin
part worn are someone eles rejected tyre
remolds are a part worn with new rubber molded over tyre
retread is tyre that has worn down and tyre groves are cut into it

remolds are both legal and cost effective
they are tested for suitability before new rubber is remolded.

Part worn from what I have seen is very hit and miss with some doggy tyres been passed off as good including winter tyres because the tyre looks like it has a lot of thread. But it is well pass opium winter performance

And AFAIK they can only use the remoulds on the drive not the steering tyres.

Nearly sure the steer tyres are remoulded as well.

The amount of part worn winter tyres on cars at the moment is frightening. On hot roads during the summer they are surely lethal.

So it did, I only noticed now.

I wouldn't buy "part worn" shoes, so why buy part worn tyres. And for the sake of a few quid more, buy good tyres. Once again, I wouldn't buy cheap shoes.
Can't understand someone paying 10k + on a car, and then putting cheap crap tyres on it.

This is the problem with the part worn stuff.

For every poster on here who comes along and says "I got a set of 2 year old 18 inch Michelins with 6mm of thread for €50 each" there are going to be several clueless people who got sold a set of mismatched winter tyres for the same money.

So for every one person who gets a bargain there are several others who are not getting value for money at all.

I got well over 2 full years on winter tyres (M+S snowflake) with no noticeable degradation in grip even on hot days, brilliant in wet, consistently good grip (which was put to the test on one or two occasions) in all weathers from the day I bought them new until the day I replaced them. That's just my experience.

Id be strict enough with them or they will give ya 4 different brands in any condition.

Iv gotten 3 pairs off them and no hassles. Best was 2 225/17 Bridgestone pozenzas that had alot more than 6 mm. With balanced and tracked for 120

This is my exact point, the only reason you got something decent off them is becuase you knew what you were looking for. You are in the minority, which is just as well because the decent tyres in their stock are also in the minority.

Not the case, i've driven on winter tyres in temperatures over 20 degrees and the weren't the worst performing tyre i've ever driven on in those conditions. I'd be more comfortable on a premium winter tyre in summer than a ditch magnet summer tyre.

5th gear tested part worn premium winter tyres and they stopped better than new regular tyres.

    Remoulds in 2014, feck :(

Nothing wrong with remoulds if done properly.
Last year in November I got rental car in Poland with remould winter tyres on it, and I must say they were actually fairly good grip (on tarmac).
Didn't have a chance to test them on snow as there was no snow there in November.

It was against new eco tires. Good brand too. They were woeful in the cold temps
