Banned sprays, disposal?

Hi folks, came across a 5 litre drum of spray in the back of the fathers shed today. Must be there 10 years. Its CMPP, but as most of the instructions have faded off the drum, Googled it to find application rates, etc.
Turns out its been banned for Agri use for the last 3 years.
How do I get rid of it?
Or can I put it in the slurry tank, a dilution rate of 30,000/1 should render it safe enough?

Thanks SpaceTime, just what I needed to know!
Web page not updated this year yet, but I can give them a call Monday. Nice little drive to Trim to bring a 5 litre can, but better than SFP penalty. We really are under the thumb, aren't we!

Diluting it wouldn't necessarily render it any safer and spredding it would result in contamination of ground water.

Some of these things are banned because they've a tendency to accumulate in ecosystems.

I certainly wouldn't want to see it being eatenby grazing cattle or entering freshwater lakes or drinking water.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expectir to be disposed of safely.

However, they're being totally stupid imposing even small charges. You want stuff like that out of circulation, not festering in a shed for 30 years.

Yeah, that's the great thing about plastic containers, the bottom isn't going to rust out of them.
Although I see its still approved for use if in a mix with MCPA or Dicamba .
Thanks for the info Spacetime, Cheers.

True, but plastics can breakdown over long periods and lids leak. They can breakdown quite rapidly when storing certain solvents and oil based products.

They're just better off properly disposed of.

It's the kind of thing I'd expect the EPA and Tegasc to be much more on top of. Like maybe actually doing collections of hazchem waste.

How are they (sprays) ultimately disposed off? In a very high temp. incinerator ?
Have they built that one up near Dunshaughlin yet?

Do you trust the authorities not to put them into landfill somewhere? ;)

Don't panic. Cmpp is in use since before I was born. As far as I know it's not banned for use in cereals.
So if you have docks etc to kill in grass fire it out but note that it kills clover.

The suggested way of disposing of old CMPP is to dilute it with a combustible solvent, and to incinerate it in a secure facility. The trip to Trim is what you need to do unfortunately. The original instructions will also have told you not to store it for longer than 2 years, as it starts to decompose of its own accord at that stage, but in an unpredictable manner.

Is there such a facility here in Ireland? How much petrol or paraffin would they need to burn off to destroy the CMPP?

Anyway, its been in storage since about 2000, and hasn't done anything unpredictable yet, the plastic can is perfect so hopefully it won't explode in the car and poison me somewhere in Meath!
