    Hey

So my old playing partner is back from Oz for 2 weeks in Sept and we are going to grab 36 holes in around one of the links close to Dublin...

    Which would you play?

    European Club €200 for 36
    Portmanarck €260 for 36
    The Island €185 for 36

I have played all 3 but years ago so looking for advice from people who have played in the last few years.

    Thanks

I wouldn't pay to play 36 holes on one course unless it was competitive. Portmarnock and the Island if it's the same day

I'd probably go for the European if I was to pick one of those courses for 36 holes.

You might consider playing 18 in Portmarnock then 18 next door at Portmarnock Links.
Little bit of variety and a little less expense.

That's a bit mad, Ted. European Club do an Open for 60 squids, why don't you play the Open in the European for 60, then plan Arklow (or Vice Versa) for about 40 and spend the change (100) on steak sandwich and beer?

Purely in answer to your question I'd play Portmarnock.

Haven't played The Island yet but The European over Portmarnock for me by a fair bit for these purposes.

Much more scenery to take it and better variation of holes that'd make 36 holes more enjoyable.

Personally I wouldn't play the links twice.

I'd play Druids Glen then European.

As good a parkland you can play in this country contrasting as good a links as you can play in the country.
Very close to each other too.

    IMO of course.

Can't play an open as my mate has been out of the country 4 years so has no handicap here..

Was initially thinking Laytown and Baltray but it's a bit far out for 36 holes that time of year.

As it's a one off with a mate who is only back for 21/2 weeks the cash ain't an issue.

Gonna call around and see if anyone will do a deal anyhows.

European really appeals as I only played it in the depths of winter years ago and loved it so wouldn't mind a end of summer test there.

Would it not be worth your while trying a play and stay deal at one of the country courses like Mount Juliet or Dromoland or even Carton?

Some great midweek deals to be had and you don't have to worry about having a pint or two after.

Carton is another very good idea as rrpc suggested.

You have two contrasting courses right beside each other and some nice facilities during your down time - while still close to Dublin.
When doing 36 in one day - I personally would like some variety.

I know you haven't named these courses but I remember hearing the ad for it on newstalk. Don't know if it's a runner for you.

Since cash isn't an issue have to reiterate ForeRight's suggestion above with Druid's Glen followed by The European Club, two of the top and contrasting courses and my all time favourites.
Personally I wouldn't bother with Cartoon House as I think the Monty course is incredibly overrated and the general green fee charged in Carton House is over priced.

Think you would be better off playing 2 different courses, the 2 portmarnocks sounds good or baltray and seapoint. Baltray would be closer than the European.

They give you the open price green fee on the open day in the European even without a valid GUI

I've played them all and it would be The Island.

But I think ForeRight's idea would be a better day out. Lunch at the glen.

If i had a choice I'd do an overnight and play evening glen. Stay at druids morning Euro

I was a member there for 2 years so have played it hundreds of times..

I am a links lover and not played it in years so hoping for 2 links rounds

Update is a mate of mine is a member of royal dublin so thinking there and portmarnock now.

    Thanks for all the suggestions

I think the monty is an absolutely cracking course and a great test. Ud get it for 40-50 which i wouldnt really class as over priced? Each to their own tho :)
