Looking to get a soundbar to fit under my TV bench: http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/images/products/hemnes-tv-bench__0182910_PE334260_S4.JPG

I'm assuming there's approximately 9-10cm clearance under the bench and it's 120cm wide.

    Any recommendations?

(if not enough space under the bench I suppose I can put it on top in front of the TV, would that be recommended?)

This is an most difficult question to answer.Do you just want it to look good on your furniture or give you a decent sound or more likely both? I would look at reviews first of all but would definitely insist on a demonstration in a decent AV store. My first sound-bar was a Phillips make as at that time I had all Phillips products. This was a very poor performer in the sound dept. and I gradually got rid of my Phillips set-up and changed to Panasonic. My present soundbar is a Panasonic to Match my Panasonic tv and is a pretty decent performer in the sound in that the wireless subwofer delivers very good bang for your buck. The speakers separate and can stand either side of the tv. A lot of makes can now do this and in the looks dept it beats the look of the bar under the tv.Would look well on your new stand but the most important thing is to satisfy yourself on the sound quality. They are not cheap. Cheers.

Looks are not important, so I'd be more concerned about getting best sound for both TV (primarily) and music (using the tv as a media player.. I don't have a stereo in the living room).

I have a Samsung TV, but the tv make shouldn't really matter should it?

Regarding the room, it's open plan, so this might affect the decision. I.e. I shouldn't opt for a soundbar that relies on bouncing sound off walls.

Yep well aware of the price, but considering it will be doubling up as a stereo i don't mind going up to 600 or 700 on a decent setup

Also is floor position ok (i'm aware it's not ideal and ear-level is better)? Or would it completely ruin the sound?

Sadly not a good option using the floor. Most sound bars rely on direction based sound ( good news if your in the room above). Perhaps look at the QED TV 2 (mounts behind the TV which quite a nice sound considering ) or the Devon / Bose model which sits under the TV ( IE under the TV's "foot" stand) . All of which are about €500 mark.

Am also looking for a soundbar. Have a toshiba tv, dont have room at the side of the tv but can fit something above the tv, or under the tv "stand".
A soundbar is the cheaper option but can it be mounted above the tv? By using brackets to fix it to the boltholes 4/5 inches below the top of the tv?
The boltholes are probably for a wall mounting bracket but I wont need them
