    Hi!

flying from Dublin to Alghero. just wondering how strict are ryanair bout the weight and stuff of hand luggage, like if i bring a standard gear bag would that be ok. i measured it and it is a little bigger than the 55x40x20 but does that really actually matter?

    thanks :)

Yes, it really matters. If the staff at the gate ask you to put it in the metal frame to check its size & it doesn't fit, you'll be asked to check it. If you are talking just a couple of cm and you can squish it in, you should be ok. If it doesn't, you could be in trouble. There is no way of knowing whether or not what the staff on the day will do that. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don't. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

cool thanks, i may just invest in something i think! have you any recommendations of a good bag/travel suitcase to get that's not too expensive?

I usually get away with a gear bag. If I'm asked to place it in the metal frame, I just squeeze it in and it's grand!

I wouldn't necessarily say 'good' but penny's do really grand ones that are the perfect size for the Ryanair square cabin bag thingy. I got one in March and have used it a few times - perfect and fits loads more in than I'd have thought... Ah penny's!

Heading off on holidays tomorrow. I'm only taking carry on, I have the big bag sorted(55cm x 40cm x 20cm) but I'm just wondering about the smaller one that you are also allowed bring. Does anyone know what kind of bag is permitted here, I was thinking like a back pack??

i brought a full back pack on a ryanair flight 2 days ago along with a full roll on suitcase!

the plane was full and no one said anything.

on the outbound flight last week i had to check my bag at the gate for free but so did more then half the plane... they counted 90 carry on cases and stopped the rest

There is an actual size limit for the extra personal bag, its on their website. Also, they have added an extra cage to their bag sizes cages that is for this extra bag - and its tiny!

I got this from argos and it was grand in the new cage, was fine for a couple of books, sandwich and a water ...

The 90 bag thing is a different thing to bag size. They only take 90 bags into the cabin. If you have bag number 91 upwards, you'll probably be asked to put it in the hold free of charge. This applies even if your bag is within the size limit.

But if you are bringing bag(s) on board, that are outside of the size limit, there is a very good chance that they make you check it. You WILL have to pay for it, as you is breaking da rulz.

Mind you, I've been on several flights since the new more relaxed approach to bags has been introduced & no one has seemed all that arsed about checking the size of passengers bags. But that is just me. Everyone isn't always going to be that lucky, especially if their second bag is a big, bulging backpack, that is blatantly over sized.

It'll fit, just don't completely ram it full of stuff.

My Wifes 55x40x20 Samsonite Carry on bag fits grand in the Ryanair metal cage thingy, make sure its under the 10KG limit and you won't have a problem.

If its slightly over just stick the heavy things in the pocket of your coat.

You can also bring a small additional piece of hand luggage like a laptop bag/hand bag etc.

Rightly so, pain in the arse for people that followed the rules and end up having to wait at the other side for their luggage that was checked in.
