NCT tomorrow - Query

    Hello all,

I have my NCT tomorrow (Friday 13th ).

I have a brake sensor warning light on my dashboard. My mechanic tells me that it is the sensor only and that the brakes are fine (he replaced them sometime ago).

He also says that it shouldn't stop the car being tested as it is a "visual" only.

I'm worried that I'll have to take an afternoon off from work, pay the fee only to be told that the car can't be tested or that it would be an automatic fail.

The mechanic will fix the sensor for me but I can't get to him before the test.

    Any thoughts?

Any warning lights will fail NCT, if you pass on everything else, you will be able to take free retest as it's visual only.

Will it just a visual though? They may not do the brake test or subsequent parts of the test as a result of the pad worn indicator warning is on. If so then a retest using the test lane again would not be free. No first hand experience of this scenario though.

Thanks for reolies. I'd be happy with the above (presuming it passes everything else!!)

I might as well attend and see how I get on as I lose a portion of the fee anyway if I bail at this late stage!

Well if you cancel at this late stage they will charge you a late fee anyway so might as well just send it through.

Only thing is having to take the afternoon off work. May not be ideal. But either way it will fail unfortunately.

Worth it imo if they spot other things that need sorting.

    Not any, some.
Specifically, the malfunction indicators for Airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Braking System (EBS) / Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Parking Brake, head lamp main beam dash light, fog lamp dash light, and indicator dash light. An engine/oil light could cause you to fail an emissions test.

If it's a faulty ABS sensor then as arleitiss says it's just a visual retest but you must book it within 21 days and complete it within 30 days otherwise it's a full test.

I'd put it through if that was me. A visual retest only takes a few minutes so you might be able to get an evening or weekend booking if that suits.

In my experience they nearly always find something small that it needs a recheck for.
I'd try and sort it but if it involves taking time off send it through like bazz26 said.

However, I know in my car a warning light was flashing on the dashboard and all it was was a loose connection under the drivers seat. Would be worth asking someone to give that a quick look just incase, it would only take two mins.

Meant to post a reply but was away.

Car passed no problem. NCT guy said that unless the warning light was an ABS or an airbag light, it didn't bother him!

Glad I went now as I'd assumed that any warning light was an immediate fail. Thanks for all the replies!!
