Losing Coolant!

Well, I'm losing coolant and I have a suspicion it's coming out the bottom off my Coolant Expansion Tank! Reason: when I was topping up tonight and because I poured the Coolant in 'pretty' quickly, it splashed around near the neck off the expansion tank and some coolant spilt out the bottom 'hole', so obviously when driving there is a possibility off spillage! My question is should there be a pipe or even a plug coming from this opening? 2001 B5.5 VW Passat AVB Engine.

Because you poured too quickly, you lost some coolant through the overflow port. No big deal, as this will not happen during normal operation once the resevoir cap is in place. Pour slowly in future;)

Now, are you actually losing coolant ? And if so, how often are you topping up?

Yes I'm losing coolant, ever since I replaced my Thermostat! I wont be able to get a good look at it untill next Monday, I'm losing about half a litre over a week about 1,000mls.

I had a coolant leak last year on my Passat. Turned out it was an o-ring on the back of the head where one of the hoses going to the heater matrix connects in. I'd start with a look through all the hose connections for dodgy o-rings. They're cheap to replace so it's a good starting point.
