RDF Recruitment Drive in September 2014

Just thought I'd update any people who missed the April 2014 recruitment drive:

I have now spoken to two people - one in recruitment office and a Lt. based in Dublin - and they both have stated that there will be another RDF (not sure about PDF) recruitment drive in September 2014. Exact date TBC.

Furthermore, the Sep drive may not even be the last of 2014. In any event, those successful in Sep will most likely (I've been told) not start FTT until a date in Spring 2015.

I thought I'd post here as I was gutted to have missed the April one - so good luck to anyone going for recruitment later this year.

If you're applying, get working on your fitness now, I hear a lot of people didn't pass in the last campaign.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'm already training to decrease run times and I've consistently made the 00:11:40 mark since I started - will try and get better though. The other bits I'm grand at.

    Hey there,

Not too sure about exact date - but I had been informed (a few different times and by a number of different people) that it'd be this month.

Keep an eye out at http://www.military.ie/careers/current-competitions/ - Check it every few days this month.

    All the best.

As far as I know, when the recruitment drive is actually announced on the site, you will be provided with a link to an application form and associated details. Then there's what seems (based on the experiences of others here) a rather lengthy process of fitness test, medical, garda clearance, and some other bits and pieces until you're eventually attested, given a uniform, and begin training either at FTT camp - or alternatively at weekly evening parades until the next FTT camp occurs.

I'd be prepared for a wait of at least six months from the time you apply to the time you're actually training and kitted out. Don't be surprised if it takes longer.

I hope not too much longer, though - at 34, I'm an 'auld fella' who wants this last chance to join before May (my 35th).

Oh right so you cant actually apply till they announce the recruitment? is there set amount of positions or will everyone get a spot?

Yeah, it's impossible to apply until a recruitment drive opens this up.

From what I can tell - but I'm open to correction on this - they accept people based on (a) each person passing all the required elements (fitness test, medical, garda clearance, etc) and then (b) the various units around the country induct people based on their own needs.

The last drive was a complete disaster, especially as they ran it at the same time as the PDF drive. Out of a class of 11 recs we have 6 going to the pdf, we are better off than most units who got 1s and 2s.
There is talk of units recruiting locally again but people would still have to pass meds and fitness etc.

Hey Mcko: Would it be best, then - for anyone who has not yet applied at all - to contact local units directly? Or will new applications only be accepted centrally and from the next full recruitment drive advertised on the military.ie website?

I think you will have to apply on line but units will be encouraged to recruit people as the last time units had no say etc, still up in the air, I know Admiral Mellett is looking into this with RDFRA.
The good news is that they are going to recruit.

Yes anyone who is interested in joining should contact their local units directly. Units are to start their own recruitment drives without waiting for the central application process to start.

The first infantry battalion has RDF companies based in Galway, Clifden and Ennis. If anyone on here is near to those locations and wants to get in touch send me a private message and I will get you the contact details. We can't post phone numbers here.
