Would be very grateful if anyone could answer some basic questions re 1st year science.

Steve sat three subjects in 1st Science this summer and passed them all. X did not sit one of the other subjects because he felt he would not pass it. He does not want to do a 'repeat' in autum in that subject (again presumably because he feels he needs to spend a year studying it as he is very weak at it) instead opting to repeat just that one subject next year. Can he do that?

    2. How much does it cost to repeat one subject if you are allowed?

    3. Are the results of First Science only accessible on line? Are they displayed anywhere else?

    Many thanks for any responses.

He should give it a shot in the repeats. Papers can be very similar every year. If he fails, he can just go the repeat route. Pointless wasting a year on assumptions and/or fear of failing.

In answer to your questions, I can answer from a Commerce background but Science may be different.
    1. Yes you can repeat just one subject. Once a module has been passed, they don't allow a resit in the Commerce courses.
    2. Colleges have different fees for repeat years. In NUI Galway, I think it is a set fee of around 1800 euro. You must take into account that you will not be entitled to any government grants for a repeat year. You probably should ring the fees office before making a decision for exact information.
    3. If it says Online result release for your course, that is the way they will release them. You can get this info from the NUI Galway site under Exams".

Just going back to my advice. Sit the repeat, he has nothing to lose by doing this...

Just sit the repeat. You have nothing to lose by doing it. Then think about repeating that module if and when you fail in august. You have plenty of time now to look through past papers and get enough info together to pass

It costs what? 200 euro to do a repeat? "X" wants to not spend that and have to fork out 1800 just on the off chance that "X" might fail the repeat? First year science exams are very alike from year to year..it is easy enough to pass a repeat if you have the summer months to study. Look how much money "X" could save by just attempting to do the repeat and pass it!

Do you know if the results of exams in NUIG are only on-line? I thought they would be posted somewhere in the college on a board or something?

    Thank you

Nope, only online, or in some cases posted out to the student. Data protection and all....
