Dyslexia and Dyspraxia...Advice for meeting with school.

    Hi,
I apologise if this post is a tad long.

I am just looking for help and advise regarding my 12 year old daughter, who has recently been identified as having dyslexia and dyspraxia. We have just received the final report from the educational psychologist, speech and language therapist and occupational therapist which we have sent into the secondary school she will be going to this September. (My daughter will need speech and language therapy and we have been advised that she will need to use a laptop and help in exams etc.).

Handwriting anything is slow and laboured for her (poor grip/hand tires easily) , and reading books/chapters/recall is stressful because of poor working memory. Speech/expression is poor. Grammar is poor, spelling is very poor, and she is unable to express herself very well in written or oral form (speech difficulty)

I will be meeting with the school in the next week or so to discuss my daughters situation, her needs and requirements etc.. I am looking for tips and suggestions on what I should be asking for...or any information or help from anyone who has been in my situation or knows anything at all that can help me to help my daughter and request the right help and learning aids..

My daughter is a very intelligent girl, great at maths, and I want to make sure she advances and I can help and encourage her while she is in school by doing the right things and asking the right questions of the school (if you know what I mean). It is frustrating for her because she puts the work in and slogs away but is hindered in her efforts because of the effects of the Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.

She will be entitled to resource hours and an exemption in Irish and perhaps languages (although I would be in favour of her continuing with Irish as she is use to it and maybe dropping the 2 extra languages in first year) so other subjects won't suffer because of her struggle with the grammar/written/spelling of a third language/languages

Thanks for reading this. I'm sorry if I have rambled. I haven't a clue where to start as this is very new to us, and any advice or suggestions regarding my meeting with her new school next week would really help out. Or any advice at all.

    Thanks,
    a worried mum.

Have the resource hours been put in place? Has she been given a laptop and how is her typing?

Who will be her year head and who will disseminate information on her needs to all her teachers?
Will there be an IEP put in place?
Can you speak with the head of SEN in the school?
