Any comments on the best job for the carpets in my car, and the carpets/seats in the wifes car? IS a wet vac the way to go? found an old thread with a link to archer outlet which has some good deals on wet vacs

by steam cleaner i meant a smaller version of the rug doctor you get in certain shops, or similar

or is cloths and some cleaner the best way to go?

Personally I have used AutoGlym upholstery cleaner water and a good scrub.
Then a wet vac to dry it out.

I got a decent deal in Argos on mine a few years ago.

The Rug Doctor machines are not steam cleaners, they are hot water extraction cleaners. The way they work is to spray a hot detergent solution onto the fabric being cleaned, then vacuuming it up a few minutes later. You can achieve the same results applying upholstery cleaner by hand and vacuuming it back up (with a wet vac), especially on a small area like a car.

Wet & Dry vac from Cleancar or Lidl

Bilt Hamber diluted and sprayed on seats
    Scrub
    Extract with wet & dry.

Stunning results can and have been achieved this way.
    Cheap as well.
