interesting idea...but it just says freeview compatible. In ireland of course we have saorview and its on a slightly different tech. You certainly wont get freeeview channels on it in Ireland. And whether you can get any saorview channels..its impossible to say without seeing the spec.

    I would pass...sorry....

Short answer seems to be no. It really depends where abouts in Ireland you live, though!

Thats for freesat though, this is a freeview tuner.

Given that it's being sold on dealrush.ie you might assume it would work here :)

    But caveat emptor I guess.

Still depends on where you live. Do you live on the East Coast or along the border with Northern Ireland?

That is almost certainly the IDTV mobile device sold by Maplin in the UK. It is not even Freeview (no MHEG) but is generic DVB-T MPEG 2 only, and strangely ISDB-T (for Japan).

No use in Ireland unless you are close to the NI border.

    But caveat emptor I guess.

Not at all as unlike France we never did any laws or enforced existing consumer protection. A very large number of unsuitable TVs sold as "Digital" between 2008 and 2013 in Ireland. By Irish and UK owned retailers (Chains and individual shops). Official RTE tests started in Dec 2007. Spec published 2008. DECNR trail was earlier and doesn't "count".

There are STILL freeview only STB and TVs on sale here (June 2014) despite ASO. It's a disgrace.

Dealz is selling a VHF aerial as a "Digital Aerial" suitable for Freeview and Saorview. All Freeview and Saorview is UHF. There isn't even any such thing as a "Digital Aerial".

So it's worse than Caveat Emptor. The Official agencies are doing nothing and mostly ignore complaints.
DENCR, Consumer Assoc. ASAI, Comreg only care about a "level playing field" and "Competition" between big companies. They will not intervene to stop marketing lies unless only one company is doing it.

I contacted dealrush support to ask them will it work in Dublin and what channels it will pick up

They responded to say it picks up whatever channel is free in the area like RTE

What do you think? If it picked up the saorview channels I'd consider it...

Using it on a android device that can use its browser for RTE player etc would stop me from buying it.

Ask them for the full specs of the unit. The unit should be capable of decoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video (Saorview standard). I've seen a similar unit to this over on amazon.co.uk that does mention MPEG-4.

    They havent a clue.

It wont work. It is Freeview Spec which is MPEG2 SD for the SD stations in the UK. They are not receivable here. It would have to decode H264 L4 DVB-T which is used for Saorview spec. Even then the signal reception from that shíty aerial would be rubbish.

Keep your money in your pocket. There are plenty of streaming sites for Live Irish TV.
