Network Win 8.1 and XP machines?

    Situation is as follows.
    Previously had XP on desktop upstairs and Win 7 on laptop downstairs with networking working as I wanted i.e. a folder on the XP m/c was visible on the Win 7 m/c etc. Recently upgraded the laptop to Win 8.1 and now despite my best efforts neither m/c can see the other on the network!
    Any ideas please?

    Have you got both machines in the same workgroup?

    I have now thanks to you!
    The default name in Win 8.1 was WORKGROUP whereas in XP it was MSHOME so all good now.

    Yeah they changed the default years ago
