Bus Eireann WiFi and Spotify

Does Bus Eireann ban the use of Spotify over their Wifi.

I have noticed that Google Music works just fine but when I tried Spotify, it kept saying I had no internet connection, despite being connected to Bus Eireann's wifi. Just wondering if this could be a spotify issue on some wifi networks or have Bus Eireann black listed it ?

    Thanks

    They also block YouTube....

I think that refers to Dublin Bus wifi though I've have had trouble connecting to YouTube on Bus Éireann wifi.

They do state they block streaming serivces (at least on Bus Eireann they do). A few weeks ago I was watching the Apple keynote on a Bus Eireann coach and, to my surprise, I had no issue streaming the presentation until about 30 minutes in when I got kicked off the network with the message that I'd exceeded my download quota. The bad news is that, while they can implement blocking for some services, for those they can't they also seem to implement a device download quota also.

Which is a good idea so everyone can use the limited bandwidth fairly.

Spotify / tune in - are 2 apps that would be used regularly on the moves. Seems unfair that public transport would supply wifi and restrict this.

It's just a question of bandwidth. You're basically pumping the net connection for everyone on the bus through a slightly more advanced 3G dongle. If they dont restrict it everybody else on the bus won't get any acceptable internet performance. Actually if a second person decided to listen to spotify as well you'd both be starved of bandwidth and hear nothing. They're not just doing it to be mean.

It is ridiculous using Spotify on a bus, jamming up everyone's bandwith for music. Every modern phone will store multiple hours of music. Likewise there are half a dozen radio stations broadcast at any point, tune in to them. When these useful services like wi-fi are provided people decide to hog it for themselves :(
