You know, I have become a convert to the camera. I don't upload video's to YouTube like the "Visualante's", I could not be bothered really, and I have no intention of submitting video to the Guards, unless I absolutely have to, but I have noticed a huge difference in the reaction of professional drivers to me wearing a camera and not wearing one.

Because I cycle, as a car driver, I am more aware of cyclists than most of my friends and family. I often wonder how can drivers attitude to cyclists being invisible or not worthy of road space be changed. I am personally not sure that education will work in the Irish context, because as we all know lads/ladies, the rules and laws mean nothing unless you get caught! But if a driver was taking a 50/50 chance that every cyclist they passed was wearing a camera, would they be so willing to take the stupid risk knowing there is a 50/50 chance of them being caught?????? Apart from the usual element of people who will be a-holes no matter what they do in life! There will always be those people. A lot of them on YouTube do seem to be on bikes with Go-Pros at the moment though :(

“We’ll see who the smart arse is now in their big car.” whispered Dun Laoghaire cyclist Damien Breen after attaching his brand new GoPro camera to his cycling helmet.

Well if that bit is true then I cant believe I havent met this warrior on the Rock Road/Beach road/Merrion Road over the last 13 years. Dont recognise him (or his bike). Maybe he is going opposite direction towards Bray:confused:

    Damien,

if you read this, stop and say hello. I am on an old single speed Carlton.

There's a very good reason why you don't recognize him and have never met him :)

Spare us the patronising "Irish context" comment, I've driven in UK and they're just as lax in abiding by the law and are equally as aggressive as the worst here. The main difference is that certain Irish people bemoan certain ham traits as national character rather than what they really are, human traits. Referring to "the Irish" doesn't make you any better than the rest of the nation. Unless you're german, then you have my vote.

I have never cycled in England, so I could not comment. I lived in Berlin and Copenhagen and cycled in both places for a number of years, so when I compare cycling in Ireland to those places ...........

However, the point I suppose I am trying to make, is that maybe the cycling community in general need to be a bit more proactive in the way we advance the position that cyclists have as much right to the road, and road safety as drivers do.
