I was going to write a bit of a rant about how it's absolutely disgraceful that one of our government institutions would be under declaring taxes etc....

But to be honest I'm actually flabbergasted about this :
The Houses of the Oireachtas, which employs staff in Leinster House, has agreed a settlement with the Revenue Commissioners for €333,412.

The settlement relates to under-declaration of Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) taxes in relation to staff.

Employers are obliged to collect the taxes and remit them to the Revenue Commissioners.

The outstanding amount of tax involved was €227,910, Revenue applied interest of €37,128 and a penalty of €68,373.

Will the person who made the "error" be named and shamed in the media or is that treatment just handed out to the peasants?

This is it... It's not as if this is a big gain or anything.

I thought Bertie left a load of signed, blank, cheques for these bills.

    maybe I am wrong though.

nope, bertie was notoriously good with finances, both personal and public. He was fastidious in ensuring every penny was accounted for, both in income and in expenditure during his time as both Minister for Finance and Taoiseach .

This is clearly just a lapse, and nothing to do with poor accounting practices which would have nothing to do with such a distinguished member of Irish society, history and heritage.
