Should I be worried about a small dog on my fields?

Just noticed yesterday a small dog walking along the ditch in one of my fields. He wasn't really bothering my sheep. I know who owns him and know that he leaves the dog roam free. Should I be too too concerned about this? The dog is old and doesn't seem to be too concerned about the sheep. But who knows what happens when I am not there and with young lambs. What would ye do?

Grand until he finds a companion to run around with. Alert owner and tell them you have stuff down and you wouldn't like him to get any.

Yes - same as Razor only takes a second for him to bring another dog with him. Also a lesser point but they are a carrier of worms...

Not to put too fine of a point on it but I'd be talking about him in the past tense.

I'd try and frighten the shyte out of him so he doesn't come back.

That's a little harsh. If he knows who owns him it's probably a neighbour and a word might be better than a bullet in the long run. You never know when you might need your neighbours.

It's practical. Harsh is pulling hoggets dead out of streams, sowing up ewes and tube feeding them, not to mention the dead.

I really wouldn't like to p*ss you off.
At least give the owner a chance to solve the problem.

At least you know where ya stand with me. Far too many dogs on the loose around here lately. Three in about a month, all on land with sheep. Dog owners, in my experience, rarely give a flying you know what about the farmer or their sheep.

Will you contact the owner and chat with him for gods sake and sort it out.
He is an old dog who does not seem bothered by your livestock(in your words) and def does not deserve the treatment some on here are talking about.
Talk to owner and tell him your concerns and get him to keep his dog in. Your sheep are alive, the dog is alive and no one needs to kill anything.

Don't get me wrong I understand that livestock needs to be protected, but if there is another way besides the cruel way then do that

I'd be more inclined to talk to the owner as well, but that's as much cos I don't have any means of dispatching the dog as anything. ;)

I think your attitude changes when you have seen the damage dogs can do, and the ignorance some dog owners display when you tell them their dogs are roaming...

Well 4th Horsemen, you have really changed your tune since 18nt February!

"Yep hang them and be done with the c...s,
They might not have a horrible time in jail as they'll prob be separated etc and also be costing us money to keep em in jail
If they don't get out early!!!

F..k them and let them hang and be gone with them so the victim and families can get on with it.
Also I'm sure the days / hours leading up to the hanging will emotionally destroy them before they are hung to die. "

    Four legs good,
    Two legs bad?

Unfortunately I know how ignorant dog owners can be and I also know the damage dogs can do when their prey drive kicks in. And is horrible for livestock so I do understand farmers point of view.
I just mean in this case where the dog is not doing any damage and if the farmer is concerned and he knows the dogs owner then should sort it out with the dogs owner.
No dog should be left to roam, especially in the country where livestock is

a dog that has done nothing
people that have commited crimes/loss of life due to been a criminal
if the dog caused damage I'm sure his tone would be abit different

    What are you on about,
That was a reply I made about a group of men who repeatedly raped a young girl over a 5 year period. and yes they deserve to hang. What has that got to do with this post???
You have to much time on your hands to go looking at peoples older posts that have nothing to do with the current topic

Not sure why my reply to a post about dirty rapists raping and sexually abusing a woman for 5 years is brought up here.
It's my opinion on that particular posts subject and I stand by that opinion of rapists, even though the reply was a bit on the vulgar side.

I also gave a valid opinion on this post so why not keep it on the subject at matter here about a farmers concern about a loose dog

    [MOD]

Thread has gone completely off topic now. As far as the OP is concerned, if the dog was doing damage he would have dealt with it by now.

artictree, perhaps it would be best to notify the dogs owner that he is straying and that he could be shot on land if he is around sheep, regardless of whether he is worrying them or not. Every dog can do damage.

    Thread closed.
