New car in September

    Hello all.. again.

My dad is planning on getting rid of his 2010 Octavia in September and wants to downsize. Fortunately I've convinced him that petrol is the way to go for the feck all mileage that he does. In 4 years there's only 55k KM on it. He should get at least €9.5k for it then (which is what I was told by a Seat dealer). Budget without trade in would be about €20k.

I've been to look at the Ibiza, Fiesta and Yaris; and thought they were all solid 'little' cars. My pick so far would be the Ibiza FR with the 1.2TSI. Though I am going to try and twist his arm to a Yaris Hybrid.

Fiesta was the nicest but too pricey. "Oh yeah, Ford's have always been expensive" was of course my dad's answer to that.

You get the idea of the size I’m talking about here, so help me see the wood from the trees.

If he wanted to minimise the feeling of being in a smaller car he could try and Audi A1? Pushing the budget slightly but they are a nice car for a supermini and don't feel like a small car. Polo might be another option.

That model Ibiza is a bit on the tinny side, doesn't feel very substantial.

    Noted about the Ibiza.

There's no TSI engine in the Polo and the max motor tax is €200, no more than what he's paying now. The A1 can make the list though. :D

There should be a new range of engines in the Polo soon with the Facelift, also a new Fabia is due and he might get a more favourable trade in going for another Skoda.

Spending €20k on a new car but ruling out cars because they cost more than €200 a year to tax is a very Irish thing these days.

OP, what about a 3dr Leon? Slightly bigger than the Ibiza but still has the refinement of the class above. It is also a fairly new model whereas the Ibiza is now nearly 4 years old.

Kia Rio is also available and comes with a 7 year warranty:

They mightn't be what they used to be but they aren't that bad. Telling the op to stay away from them is a bit Ott imo.

Most quality issue with Toyota were on previous models launched from the mid 00's to the early 10's.

Cars such as the mk1 auris, the 2007 on corolla, the mk2 yaris, and the mk3 avensis all suffered from quality issues and felt cheaply made.

The newer auris and corolla look to be of much better quality than what the previous models were. The yaris looks a better car than its predecessor too.

They are still not as good as they were in years gone by which is highlighted by their use of BMW diesel engines in their cars, these engines were troublesome in BMW and I can't see them being any better in a Toyota.

The 1.33 dual vvti, the 1.6 valve matic, and the 1.4 d4d however are all Toyotas own engines and are fitted to current models. All are proven reliable units.

However the days of Toyota mindset of putting pride of workmanship and quality before profit seems to be over since the early 00's. However they still make some good cars, just not as good as the unbreakable ones they made years ago.

I have one of those unbreakable ones too, some cars they were :)

It won't be my last though, I'll get a 02-07 model corolla sometime, which are still pretty good cars.

I'll skip the poor stuff though, a mk1 auris and it's corolla sibiling springs to mind, and anything BMW powered or Peugeot powered is a no, no for me. If I wanted a BMW or a Peugeot I'd go out and buy one :pac:

We've currently got a Skoda (bleedin') Rabid (Rapid Spaceback) in on Demo. Ambition model with a special offer Tech Pack that's currently available.

This one is a 1.6Tdi, but it's also available with the 1.2Tsi (5 or 6 speed). 6 Speed, with metallic and Tech Pack is coming in under €21,000 before delivery.

Just sat in the front, got the seat in my driving position, then sat in the back - very impressive leg room there for a car in this class, with a fairly sizeable boot too, and the Spaceback version is fairly decent looking (the saloon mings).

Tech Pack gives Amundsen Nav, Cruise Control and Rear Electric Windows - for €250!

Worth a look, plus - should get a very good trade in value to a Skoda dealer, for a 2010 Octavia with 55k on. Presuming Ambition spec and 1.6Tdi, I'd be looking for a trade in value of €14,000 at the moment, but willing to deal on €13,500 giving circa €8,000 cost to change.

Believe it or not the Rapid would be way too big.

He (really) doesn't like the Fabia in its current state and the facelift is too far away.

For a man who would have motoring quite low on his list of priorities, he's very fussy. :pac:

Does it have to be brand new?

He'd have his pick of early 10's cars with a 30k budget.

I'll suggest an auris too. I know its from the class above a jazz so it's a little bit bigger and in the higher spec "sol" trim it's a few k's over your budget but you do have a trade in with that 20k?

    http://toyota.ie/models/auris/

AFAIK an auris "Sol" can be got for €22,100 excluding delivery charges. It comes with a 1.33 dual vvti engine and is €270 to tax afaik.

The 20k isn't a rigid figure and there is a trade in of at least 9.5k.

I've also been contemplating the new Citroen C3.

The Rapid is based on the saloon VW Polo that is sold in some countries, they very similar is size to the Fabia. I think what makes them look a bit bigger is the boot.

VAG logic tells me the SEAT Toledo would be even better value then.

I'd definitely try the Auris hybrid. Great MPG and very reliable engine.

Cheaper and better standard specification the last time I checked, but not sure if they have anything similar to the Tech Pack offer, which is very good value.

Just take him around and have a go in it. Don't let him know it's an auto until after you take it out for a test drive :) He'll either be pleasantly surprised or he'll hate it.

I heard an ad on the radio this morning while driving into work for the Toyota Auris. Apparently for a few quid more you can upgrade to an 'Auris Sol'...! What were the marketing people thinking...?!

They have been using the "sol" trim level for years and years on their cars. And that's what it is, a trim level and not the name of the car. I dont know what you find so bad about it tbh.

Nearly All car makers do the same. For example You have vw with "trendline"and "highline" and hyundai with "deluxe" etc

The "Sol" spec is the highest spec there is in Ireland on the auris and it's well worth the upgrade over the "terra"or "aura" spec IMO.

Why? At least they recall faulty components.

Talk to all the Mini and BMW diesel owners with failing timing chains that aren't covered by a recall and thus they have to pay out of their own pockets.

Talk to all the owners of the original BMW R1200's where the brake servo fails and you lose almost all braking. This has led to accidents and possible deaths, and still no recall.

You can argue that the interior isn't the classiest, or you might not like the design, but are they really bad cars?

They fixed the issue with the timing chains from 2011 on so should be ok. Well only fixed because they ran out of the bad sprocket and had to make new ones!
