What to do with old car? Video of noise included.

Hey again, so I followed previous advices and decided not to invest further into repairing the E46, I kept driving it until it breaks or dies but I didn't expect it to quick, it happened already (1 month after) it still drives but the noise from engine is impossible to handle, every single person on street turns around and looks.

It sounds like valves or something, because the higher the RPM the faster ticking becomes and a bit quieter, on 300 RPM the ticking is slower.

    Here are two videos:

    Engine bay:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmp5TbZ3uAY

    Driving:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl9n3IP80r4

Also I followed suggestion and just got new car, decided to go with
    2001 Golf 1.4 Manual Petrol.
Never drove one before but after driving it home I started to love it :D

Anyways, any suggestions what to do with old car? I don't see point of selling it for a 300 euro with such engine.

Any suggestions of what it could be? What I could try out on it? (the E46)

P.S - what stops seller from calling Garda tomorrow and saying I stole the car? She got the log book obviously since deal was made at midnight and there was no way to send it off, she said she will send it off in morning, but I am a little paranoid from reading stories before.

I tore the little slip off the log book and kept it.

    Thanks.

Btw there are no warning lights on, and the car still accelerates, no misfires, no shaking or anything, pure noise.

Just to let you know, those golf engines are crap.

Oil stems etc all go causing it to fail nct and need engine rebuild.

Car just passed NCT, timing belt changed 5k miles ago, new tires and some suspension part replacements, passed NCT in end of May.

I just need to get at least a year out of it.

    Re engine noise

Last time I heard that noise the car did stop working. Lost compression. Needed engine replaced

Could be something like air in the valves where there should be oil. So my guess is the head of the engine is completely bolloxed but won't drive for much longer even though it drives fine now

Jesus you have a knack for buying trouble. A 1.4 golf from that era is not good. Loads of them for sale with engine trouble and they have been burning oil since early days.
Anyway hope you got a good one.

Get rid of bmw for whatever you can get.

engine was replaced recently, old engine was 180k miles, this one is 80k miles. The garage that did it kind of refuses to fix it now, so I doubt there is point asking them, I guess nothing I can do myself?

Would I get more if I sold it by parts?

Nobody would fix it and put a warrenty on it. Not even an engine rebuild specialist because there could be a blockage somewhere in the engine block or something broke off internally.

Either way the head would be destroyed (I dont just mean head gasket, I mean valves, camshafts etc. ) and nobody would want to touch it

The best option is to replace the engine but I personally don't like doing that as you now my proof that you can get a bad one again !

I think you're well out of warrenty on that engine anyway. I know the timing chain was hanging off it which is why you got it replaced under warranty but that was many months ago at this stage.

Only option to you now is sell for parts/scrap

On the golf.... check oil level every couple of days. I mean that !

Don't think there would be big money out of it either way.

I bet if I put it up for sale for parts, the first would go wheels, it's CSL alloys 18". But then again, how would I leave car with no wheels? just on it's brake discs? any ideas? :D

Have you got anywhere to store the car while you're breaking it? Personally if I was my car and I'd spent as much as you had on it, I'd just want the fcuking thing out of my sight, and I'd take whatever the scrappy would give me for it.

Yeah it's a bit dark now, I will check it in morning. The car seems to be in good condition in general, I just needed any car asap since I live **** far away from City center.

Nope, only public parking in front of my apartment really.

Did you ever run it low oil? Sounds like big ends gone.

You can't really break it so.

If it's NCT'd stick it on adverts for €200, otherwise drive it to your nearest breakers yard. Get a scrappage cert, then go home and have a glass of lemonade and don't even think anymore of it.

Best of luck with it but being on boards years did you not come across one of the many threads on here regarding these cars soft engines?

    How much are wheels worth?
You could pick up a free **** set of wheels to fit to it and sell the alloys if they are expensive.
Alternatively If you have the time and the space, you could strip it quickly, store the parts away and get the shell moved out to scrap man asap. You could then get your wheels, body panels, lights etc sold at your leisure. I don't see much money in it though.
edit: no space to break it so get shut.

Ah well, hopefully I don't see a new life lesson coming soon. The woman who was selling car had it fixed by her husband, he's a mechanic or so, she showed me all NCT reports, failed reports and passed ones. It failed once, he fixed it and it went through with no bother.

Will hope for the best. Anything else I should be aware of?

I guess wheels could go for 200-250 (if lucky)

Keep a good eye on the oil level and if you plan on keeping the car a long time get the timing belts replaced. Make sure a genuine vw kit is used and not an aftermarket one.

TB was done 5k miles ago. It's marked on engine with white marker.

Hmm sounds like the big end anyway.

I'd strip everything of reasonable value from it. Have a luck at breaking ads on adverts and see what people are looking for.
If it has leather take out the interior. Take of the wheels, and put it on skinnies. Take out the stereo. Wing mirrors. Door cards etc from the interior. Take the battery from it. The tool kit.
The. Pop it up on adverts, there's plenty of sensors there that people will pay 20 quid or so for each. Keep the maf.

After a week or two call a few scrappies see who'll give you the best price for collection.

Iyou could try sell it for parts or repair for 300 quid. You might get someone for it that way.
You'll get more money in the long run by stripping some of the valuable stuff off it than selling for repair. However if you live in a built up area the longest you'd get away with it for is about a week or two before you seriously piss off the neighbours.

How old was the clutch and what was the box like? If newish and good you might get 150 plus. If the rad is good take that as well, same with ecu and keys.

Someone probably told him not to get a 1.4 Mk IV. There not that bad, it shouldn't sh1t itself anyway :pac:. Very thirsty as you have to keep the revs high to get any way decent power out of them would be my biggest complaint of the ones I've driven. If ever a man needed some good old fashioned cheap Japanese motoring it's the OP.

I could go out and mark with white marker that the belt was done 100 miles ago on mine (it was done 1500 miles ago).
Just because it's in white marker doesn't mean it was done. The only proof it was done is a receipt for parts and labour or parts if done themselves. However he'd want to be a good enthusiast for me to trust him to do it himself.

I was gonna get another E46, but then I kind of changed my mind, if I ever get another BMW, it's gonna be 3 years old at most with full history.

    Interior is fabric.
Trims are wrapped in white carbon (very clean).
Clutch is 2k miles at most.
    MAF is around 7k miles.
    Radiator is about 9k miles.
Thermostat, and whole cooling system: 9k miles at most.
    Stereo is non stock.
    Brake discs - 6k miles.
    Heated mirrors.

    A quick idea:
What stops me from stripping car entirely, just leaving car body, door locks and wheels on?
When engine parts, interior, battery is gone = sell wheels and scrap the body? I mean from outside it wont look like stripped, it will just be there. I heard before that there are services that will scrap car + collect it free + might even give some cash for it?

You probably have a management company in your apartment block who'd prevent you from doing it.
AlSo it's not exactly legal for someone to dismantle a car unless they're an ATF.
If it was parked on a driveway, you'd get away with it for a few days but even at that, neighbours will start complaining.

If the interior is fabric you'd probably get jack **** for it.
The rad, the gearbox, the maf, the stat etc would all get you a decent bit.
