British comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, according to his management team.

He played the obnoxious, poetry-writing anarchist Rick in The Young Ones alongside his friend Adrian Edmondson before the duo later went on to star in their sitcom Bottom.

Mayall also appeared in shows including Blackadder and The New Statesman.

He was left seriously ill after a quad bike accident in 1998 which left him in a coma for several days.

Mayall's film roles included the comedies Drop Dead Fred and Guest House Paradiso.

    Sad news.

He had some great performances, Rick in the Young Ones, Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman and the brilliant Lord Flasheart in Blackadder to name a few.

    RIP

Very sad. He was a great actor and comedian. Five Go Mad In Dorset stopped me in my tracks when I saw it first as a teenager. I still think it's one of the best pieces of British comedy ever. He's brilliant in it but, they all are actually. I think they were all at the top of their respective games. Lord Flashheart is epic as well. I was shocked yesterday evening when I found out. He's responsible for two of the funniest pieces I've ever seen on television and, sadly, I won't get to see what he does next. Such a shame. RIP.

Does anyone remember him as Kevin Turvey investigative reporter?
    That was class.

    BBC Two ‏@bbctwo 1m
In honour of Rik Mayall we'll be showing both Bottom and the Comedy Connections episode of The Young Ones on Sunday night from 10.30pm.

I expect BBC2 will probably do a proper tribute to him later in the year (like they did when Mel Smith died)

BBC 2 have a little tribute night for Rik Mayall next Saturday (December 20th)

    9.35pm BlackAdder II
Edmund Blackadder, conniving courtier to Elizabeth I, takes in a spirited lad as his manservant - unaware the fellow is actually a woman out to make her fortune. Classic comedy, starring Rowan Atkinson, Miranda Richardson and Stephen Fry, with a guest appearance by Rik Mayall as Edmund's best friend Lord Flashheart

10.05pm Rik Mayall: Lord of Misrule
Comedian and actor Rik Mayall died suddenly in June, but left a body of work that spanned four decades and was a blend of rocket-fuelled physical comedy, surrealism, subversive satire and pompous punk wit. Mayall's characters included the Black Country investigative nerd Kevin Turvey, Felicity Kendal-adoring student poet Rick in The Young Ones, unemployed oddball Richard Richard in Bottom, ruthless MP Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman and the roguish Lord Flashheart, who appeared in the second and fourth series of Blackadder. Narrated by Simon Callow, this documentary celebrates Mayall's part in British comedy history, with contributions by Michael Palin, Simon Pegg, Lenny Henry, Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle, Christopher Ryan, Tim McInnerny, Jools Holland, Ruby Wax and Greg Davies

    11.05pm The Young Ones
The four students decide to throw a party, but before long it descends into chaos. Rick desperately tries to impress his favourite lecturer, Mike chats up a fairytale princess, Vyvyan's fellow punks start a riot, and Neil gets beaten up, while other guests include the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, a giant sandwich, a singing tomato and Santa. Comedy first broadcast in 1982, starring Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, with music by Rip Rig and Panic

I wonder if Ade Edmondson will contribute to that 'Lord Of Misrule' programme. When interviewed a few weeks ago, he was still reluctant to talk about Rik on camera...

The BBC approached him recently to take part in a tribute programme.

“I was sent the synopsis and it was all wacky and wild and…” he breaks off and sighs. “You could see it was just going to be a load of talking heads and clips, so I pulled out of that… I just think he deserves something better than that. And I think, if someone important dies, you can’t be flippant about it.”

And Lord Flasheart is due at Blackadder's Wedding right now ...

Greg Davies, distant relative of Rik?

Greg Davies, distant relative of Rik?

They were always asked if they were related, and eventually Rik played Greg's Dad in the Channel 4 comedy Man Down.

Edit: Gremlins, I think its the right clip now

Edit 2: For some reason this keeps changing to an episode of The Bill. Search for 'Man Down Rik's scene' on Youtube for the clip I wanted.

Ah, sure Spinal Tap > most things on this planet.

Bad News is good fun, even it's not original.

It's such a shame Ade Edmondson decided not to take part.

Imagine if Ant died, and Dec decided to snub the tribute programme.

By coincidence, that episode of Jonathan Creek was on one of the Satellite channels (Watch) tonight.

That's Rik's Doctorate Speech (presented by Floella Benjamin, no less). 10 minutes long, well worth a look.
