I'm a law student going into third year and I'd like to go and see the courts in action. I know they're on this week where I live and I was wondering what the protocol is for going to watch? What time etc

What kind of cases? If you're interested in criminal law I suggest checking out court 44 or 46 in the Bridewell to see what it's like on the ground floor of the business.

Going by the op saying the courts are on this week where they live I'd say he's in a country district.

Just go to the courthouse and sit down, be quiet and don't use your phone. Show the Court respect and enjoy the "show".

Yeah just the district, can I just walk in then?

Yes, just behave more or less as in church: take off any headgear, put the phone on silent and only talk in whispers, preferably not when the judge is speaking!

A day in the District Court is a great education. It gives you a good insight of what happens at local level. Even the most serious criminal offence commences with an appearance in the District Court (bar the subversive stuff).
It's better fun when the District Judge is a looper and has a set against certain solicitors or Gardai
