Ford Focus Problems

I have a 1.6 Focus Hatchback Petrol 01 Car with a few problems. Looking for advice on what could be wrong and the cost of repair.

    1. The car has central locking, when I press the button on the key to lock the doors, I can hear it locking but straight away it unlocks again. Same if I put the key in the door to lock. It just keeps unlocking straight away.

    2. The speedometer randomly drops to 0 and the mileage disappears and goes to a dashed line, the car will chuck and the clock may or may not come back up. I have only just replaced the coil pack and plugs as I know this can cause this problem.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

    1. There's a door not closed (including the boot!), or a door switch is faulty. Do the interior lights stay on for more than 30 seconds after closing the doors? You'd need an auto electrician to find the faulty switch, the switch is built into the door lock and not easily tested.

    2. The VSS is faulty, these are about €60 from Ford or €30 on ebay. They're handy to fit if you don't mind getting under the car, or a garage with a lift should be able to do it in 15 mins.

As long as the retaining pin isn't seized solid in the gearbox :(:(

Maybe I was lucky, mine pulled straight out with a vicegrips :D

A quick google shows a lot of guys have trouble with it, probably safer let a garage worry about it in that case.

I had that sensor go twice in my old focus. They fail all the time. In my car it also weirdly affected the stereo!

Have an 00 Focus with both those problems.
Replacing speedo won't be too bad 60ish + labour.
For the central locking, most likely the drivers unit... could just get a used one and have it fitted.
