World cup is starting in a few days and I want to get a STB that can record saorview channels. I want to be able to program the recording via a timer function. What's the most reasonably priced STB that can do this? I was thinking about the HUMAX HDR2000T 500GB but was hoping there might be something a bit less expensive. Can anyone recommend anything?

EDIT: Or maybe the Humax HB-1000S with an external HDD connected to it?

Yes, I read a lot of threads, that's where I heard about it and felt the Humax might be better than the Panasonic.

Would the cheaper Humax HB-1000S with an external HDD I mentioned not work?

no the humax hb 1000s is a satellite freesat box so will not work with saorview. It needs a satellite dish and will only give you the uk channels.

Why is this DMR HWT 130 being mentioned all the time ?

It does not allow you view the recordings on anything other than the box it is recorded on !

OP to do this cheaply, get a generic Combo box like a Ferguson 150/250 and connect a USB drive to it. It has a timer function. It also does not have any issues with Copy Protection, so you can disconnect the drive and watch it on a PC, other TV etc.

I have the 635 model and it does what I want it to do, it's located where I want it and where I watch what I've recorded. The same could apply to the OP.

I ended up going for the ariva 252, although I could have gone for a saorview only box for around €50 but I felt this might limit me in the future if I wanted to go satellite. Thanks for the help.

Do you have an external USB drive ? Dont forget that you will need one of those. They are about €50 on amazon for a 1TB.

The box you got will also play DIVX/AVI/MKV media files off any USB device.

Yes, I have a few USB flash drives, although the manual states that your USB drive needs to be able to write at 9MB/s to avoid any issues and not many USB flash drives will write at this speed. It also says 750GB is the max size for HDDs. I ended up buying a 500GB off HWV for €47 delivered.

The media player is a good function, I can see me selling my HTPC soon.

It also has a function called my iptv which basically allows you stream H264 streams from the internet or your lan. (make sure the firmware version is 1.23B2 onwards for this to function).

There is a big thread on the 150 and 250 in the terrestrial forum. The functionality is the same as the 250 but don't use any of that firmware as it would brick the box (the 252 has an updated terrestrial tuner and the 250 is discontinued as a result). Any issues the 250 thread is where to go.
