    hi all,
I have a mf 165 that makes a rough rubbing noise when you touch the clutch pedal. it will go into every gear and drive no problem without any noise when you take your foot off the pedal. If you just barely touch the pedel it rubs.
thinking its the clutch release bearing? but wanted to get some info before i order any parts as i dont want it lying in the shed in 2 halves for ages. space is at a premium.

also it has power steering thats very heavy when turning to the right, helps if i rev it. heard theres a common problem with this but cant find info on exactly what causes it. Its got a pump connected to the side of the engine and a ram in front of the radiator turning the steering arm. (know there are a few setups)

    any help would be great,
    thanks.

sounds like the release bearing,i take it theres no noise when the pedal isn't depressed?.power steering wasn't a great setup, you could try putting new pins in the adjuster on the ram I herd of lads drilling the pin holes a little bigger too,i think you can tighten the stud on top with the screwdriver slot.

Might as well split her, and replace the bearing. Checking the clutch plate condition while your at it. Sooner or later the rattling will stop, when the bearing seizes. The problem then is that the seized bearing will heat the clutch fingers and cause lots of expensive problems.

agree with that, MF dealers used to do exchange clutch and pressure plates reasonable one time, had more meat on discs though than some spurious.saw one SP plate to crack a few months old. have you taken off inspection plate underneath and checked condition of fingers and adjustment , think it was 70 thou but might be wrong. had problem with vibration, but in my case it was flywheel but you had to press clutch down a bit, some forget that needs to be replaced

I suppose, on reflection, that a seized bearing won't do as much harm as quick on a Massey, as it would on a tractor with a diaphragm pressure plate. Last MF one I put in, in a 65, complete kit came to about 270 Euro.

most likely the release bearing. We had an old nuffield which whined when you touched the clutch. the father was able to spray wd40 on the bearing and the noise disappeared. only a short term fix though, but would probably be possible from the inspection plate under the bell housing

ALMOSTOVER posted an article in "165 Power Steering Thread", on a kit available from agriline for around €450 , they might be worth a try, could be easier than ripping and adjusting present steering setup
