    Hi all,

We will be travelling from Cornwall to London with kids and dog by car this summer. We want to break up the journey as we are in no rush, and are looking for suggestions for a nice place to stop off where we can walk the dog and eat and maybe explore for a few hours.

I had been thinking Exeter, but now I'm not so sure.

    Here is our route:

Bristol? You can go and see the SS Great Britain (though the dog wouldn't be welcome) and the Clifton suspension bridge. Bath would be a nice place to stop but it's a heritage town with not much to appeal to kids.

Stonehenge is on your route and will kill anything from five minutes to an hour. Salisbury is quite a nice town, or you could go via Dorchester and visit bovingdon tank museum or monkey world.

There's the Hawk Conservancy in Andover as well. It's years since I last went there, but it was very good.

Bird World between Farnham and Alton is good for kids as well.

    Stockbridge, Hampshire. Quaint little town.
Army Flying museum at Middle Wallop nearby.

If it was me, I would try to get more than half of the journey done at the start, so that after your stop you would not feel like there is still a long journey to go. Or else make 2 stops, Exeter as you mentioned, plus another closer to London.

What about Highclere Castle & grounds, where Downton Abbey is set? Highclere is between Andover & Newbury. Afterwards, it might be closer to continue on to the M4.

It does say that dogs are allowed on a leash in the grounds, just not in the castle & gardens. Also, they have different prices depending how much you want to see. It is £5 for the grounds and kids of 4 & under are free. The castle & gardens cost more.

Sorry I'm only seeing this reply now! Thanks so much for all that info.
