Looks like one of these games (on 21 June) will be shown live on RTE.

Derry v Laois the only potentially attractive tie for that day....Derry v ??? or Laois v ??? will presumably be first choice but could be one sided. I guess two of the weaker counties could be well matched and so be a better game to watch.

From a Limerick pov, we had a very bad opening round against Tipperary. For us to get back on track, probably need a kind draw.

We are probably on the easier side of the draw... as long as we avoid Derry, I'd be reasonably happy. Laois' performance today was good, and they'd beat us but I wouldn't fear them. Same with Fermanagh really, although they beat us handily in the league.

Sick of Longford, played them 2 years in a row now. We can beat them, especially at home (we beat them in the league), but Offaly/Wicklow/London would be the draws I want.

You could see Down vs Cavan, Down vs Monaghan/Tyrone, Cavan vs Monaghan/Tyrone which would result in a fairly big casualty in Round 1.

What way does who gets home advantage work?

I think if you were away in your last qualifier game, you are entitled to home this time... whoever is drawn first otherwise.

Cavan played Derry away last year and then played London in Croke Park so I presume their last qualifier is classed as away?

    Yeah, I'd imagine so.

EDIT: sorry, not quite the case.

    http://www.gaa.ie/gaa-news-and-videos/daily-news/2/0606141230-football-qualifiers-round-1-draw-on-monday/

    First team drawn shall have home advantage;
    Exceptions:
    1. Where two teams who have already met in the 2014 Provincial Championship, are drawn to meet, the winner of the earlier game in the Championship shall have home venue
    2. Except as provided for above, if a County did not have home advantage in the 1st Round of the 2013 Qualifier Series, it shall have Home Advantage in the 1st Round in 2014. In the event of both teams having played away in 2013 or both teams having played at home the first team drawn shall have home advantage*.
*Counties drawn away in Round 1 in 2013:
A Side: Laois, Fear Manach, Luimneach, Cill Mhantáin
    B Side: Tír Eoghain

This A and B thing increases the chances of a repeat fixture, does it not. If Monaghan beat Tyrone then can Tyrone draw Down? If Cavan draw the likes of Clare/Leitrim then they would win and play one of 4 teams beaten at the provincial semi stage, which would include Armagh.

    Derry v Longford
    Laois v Fermanagh

    Limerick v London
    Wicklow v Offaly

Wouldnt be surprised with all 4 home wins

    Louth v Monaghan/Tyrone
    Cavan v Westmeath
    Carlow/Meath v Clare/Waterford
    Down v Leitrim

Hard to see Louth getting a result
Cavan v Westmeath should be interesting
    Carlow presuambly versus who? -
    Down surely

You'd have to imagine that Derry v Longford and Laois v Fermanagh are the 2 games in contention for televising.

Bit silly that Tyrone could enter the qualifiers at the same point as Down, even though they've beaten them.

Same with Laois/Wicklow, Longford/Offaly and Louth/Westmeath. If a team is knocked out of the province before the semi final stage, they automatically go into the first round of the qualifiers.

What I find ridiculous is that both Cork and Kerry will basically be exempt from the first round of the qualifiers for the foreseeable future unless one of them suffers a major upset in the previous year.

You would think so. Longford actually beat Derry in the Qualifiers as recently as 2012. Laois v Fermanagh probably the highest ranked pairing?

Based on the criteria for home advantage, looks like both Derry and Laois will have home advantage. Both Longford and Derry had home advantage in last year's Round 1 Qualifiers and both Laois and Fermanagh were away. Looks like Limerick will be at home and so will Wicklow based on the criteria above.

In 1B, Westmeath were at home in Round 1 last year, so I assume Cavan get the advantage. Carlow will have to travel and so too will Louth. Looks like Down will be at home.

Have often thought it'd be good if teams who lost their first game went into the first round of qualifiers, rather than teams who lost in a specific round. Would still be the same number of teams in each round and would nullify the advantage that two teams have in Munster (+ 1 in Connacht) of getting a bye to a provincial semi-final.

Would need the Munster Semis to have been played already though, so probably not realistic.

Limerick at home to London, that's as good a draw as we could have hoped for. Can't fcuk it up now, get the win, get a bit of confidence and hopefully we can do something in the next round then. A big opportunity for Brudair.

whats the story with two separate draws, A and B?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

The 8 teams that go through from each of the 4 ties. Do they play each other in round 2 or do they play teams that lost in provincial semi finals?

It's to allow county boards to plan their club fixture lists for an extended period compared to previously. Also helps the county team plan and prepare for games.

To give an example, if your county team is in the B side of the group (http://www.gaa.ie/content/files/GAA%20Football%20All%20Ireland%20Senior%20Championship.pdf), you know you will be playing your qualifier games on the 28/6, 12/7, 19/7 and the August bank holiday weekend. This is an improvement on before, when on entering into the qualifiers, you didn't know when you'd be playing.

I found the info below from - http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/race-for-sam-set-for-radical-overhaul-29482915.html

The hoped-for benefits from the new system are:

    1. Counties who are eliminated in the early provincial rounds will have to wait a maximum of four weeks for a first round qualifier as opposed to six or seven weeks under the current system.

    2. The greater certainty regarding fixtures will facilitate more reliable scheduling of club games.

    3. There will be a more even spread of games (12 football games were played in the last weekend of June this year, compared with five on the following weekend). Playing the All-Ireland quarter-finals over two weekends in August increases the promotional value.

    4. Beaten provincial finalists will have at least 13 days before playing a fourth round qualifier as opposed to six in some cases under the old system.

However, there will be downsides too, including a much greater chance of provincial rematches in the early rounds of the qualifiers.

Maybe a stupid question but how is it decided which teams go into A and B?
