Hair straighteners for US?

Hey guys, I need to get a new hair straightener&hairdryer for the US on the cheap and I've seen a remington one on Amazon.com - does anyone know what the craic is with taxes when ordering electrical applicances from the US? I have a remington one at the mo, but it's only 250V.

If anyone knows anywhere in Dublin I can pick up a 110-120V one, I'd really appreciate it also!

    Cheers

it would probably be much cheaper to pick one up in a drugstore when you're over there!

    Anyone?

    Even to get it shipped?

    Even to get it shipped?

My best option is to get it here, hence the question, argh ...guess no one knows! I'll just get it on amazon US and chance my arm on the tax so.

Why don't you get it shipped when you are in America?

Basically you need one with 'worldwide voltage'.

Here's one from Argos that is super cheap

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/4433745/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHealth%2Band%2Bpersonal%2Bcare%7C14418350/c_2/3%7C19805475%7CHair%2Bcare%7C14418399/c_3/4%7Ccat_14418399%7CHair%2Bstraighteners%7C14418402.htm

    And here is the dryer

    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/4439196/Trail/searchtext%3EDRYER+TRAVEL.htm

Remember you will still need a plug converter for them.

It's not so hard to find these online, don't see how you had so much trouble. Took me about 30 seconds to find something.

It is a bad idea to order from amazon US. Shipping will be gigantic and taxes on top of that.

I'm not looking for dual voltage, as everything I've read reviews wise has been negative in terms of them overheating or underheating. I'm specifically looking for a US only one, that's why I had the bother. Thanks though!

    Won't be there long enough.

Buy it at the airport when you land?
Or if you're there long enough to use a hair straightener you'll be there long enough to go to a pharmacy or supermarket. There's really no reason for you to not buy one over there.

V.small airport. And again - asshole of nowhere.

Jeez, I asked a straight forward question and asked for a straight forward answer; I've also said about 3 times - including in my OP - that I wished to buy them online or here if possible.

Close the thread thanks, looks like it was pointless.

People have given you a lot of options and you've shot them down for no reason. What airport are you flying to? Where is this middle of nowhere place? I live in the US near some remote places but know that there's always something near the airports. Why can't you buy it online now and ship it to the US address like someone said?
It is a very straight forward question but you're making the replies difficult. Don't ask for help and then get narky at people replying.

If you buy it on amazon, you'll get charged huge shipping, it'll likely take at least a week to arrive, and then customs will hang on to it until you pay extra tax on it, probably along with a fee from the shipping company. So expect that the final price will be 2-3 times what the quoted price online is. And that's only if they'll ship electronic items to you. I know amazon.co.uk can be funny about that due to certain restrictions.

I really doubt you'd get anything with US voltage here in Ireland.

So as much as you're resisting the idea, buying one in the airport when you land is by FAR the most sensible solution. Unless it's an airport the size of farranfore, they'll probably have some kind of shop where you can get it, or perhaps you stop at a bigger airport beforehand.

Or just bring your own stuff with a voltage converter.

I brought my GHDs to NY and they took longer to heat up but worked perfectly!

Hang on a second there. I have stated what my options are and asked if anyone can help with a specific question. I have also stated that the alternatives suggested are not an option. I'm under no obligation to explain why.

I'm getting narky, justifiably, because I can't seem to get a straight forward reply to a straight forward question from someone who has actually read my whole post.

    i.e.

Does anyone know what the taxes would be to ship here from Amazon US, or does anyone know where I can get a US voltage one in Ireland.

Very easy question. I haven't asked where to get a dual voltage one, I haven't asked if I can ship one to the US and I haven't asked if I can buy one when I get there. I've already looked at these options and they aren't options, which is why I posted here.

    Actually, I checked amazon.com:
Buyers outside the U.S. cannot purchase the following types of items from sellers: video games, toy and baby items, electronics, cameras and photo items, tools and hardware, kitchenware and housewares, sporting goods and outdoor equipment, software, and computers.

So it doesn't matter what the taxes are. You can't go that route.

Hey, thanks a mil. Yes it really is tiny, - in Shannon airport terms. With the voltage converter it's the same risk as dual voltage, may not work. Ah I guess I'll just risk getting one on Amazon.com or ebay and see how I get on with the taxes, if it's cheap enough it shouldn't be too bad even paying twice for it.

Maybe try emailing a few companies that make hair straighteners and see can u buy a straightener off them directly. Also sephora and macys delivers to the uk do maybe using parcel motel you might be able to get one that way

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭hfallada

If you are staying in a Hotel why cant you order it from amazon to it. The same with a house. Surely you are flying into a large airport before you go to a regional one. Why cant you buy the stuff there?

A hair dryer is a basic item. I imagine even in the middle of no where in the us you can still buy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭Miaireland

If you go on the Irish Customs site you will probably be able to find the rate of tax/duty you will be charged for the item. Depending on what service delivers the items An Post/ DHL etc they will also charge a processing fee which you will be able to find out by emailing them.

Take a look on the amazon.co.uk site. I have bought items that turned out to be US voltage on that (I must confess I hadn't planned to).

I know you say you are going to a remore airport but could I suggest that you google the airport and see what shops are there. Even the remote airports in the States normally have a shop that you can pick up bits and bobs that you may not have packed.

Hi! Thanks for that, I actually already googled it and there isn't anywhere there :( I really did go through all options before posting the thread here. But maybe in the stopover it might be possible.

I've been keeping an eye on amazon.co.uk but all the US ones are delivered from the US. If I found a US voltage one in the UK it'd be class, will definitely keep looking!

It might be worth putting an ad on adverts or something similar. You might have someone from the USA who has moved here and might have a USA one that they would be willing to sell you to. It is a long shot but might work.

Problem solved - gas powered straightener!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

Personally, I'd order it from Amazon once in the US and get it shipped overnight to where you are staying. You could even order it a day or two before you leave. I've bought many things this way while in the US.

Just check that you can carry them on an airplane. I am not sure but I would have thought that you would not be able to carry gas powered things online unless you are planning to buy the gas over there,.

My hair straightener has always worked fine in the US. Am I missing something? :o

All the GHDs made for the last 7-8 years will work fine on either 110 or 230V.

Cheap straightners may not work the only way to be sure is to look on the inside of one of the staightner arms and there is a sticker/name plate with the voltages and stuff written on it.

That being said there are plenty of reports of hair straightners working that dont say 110V on them, but they dont get as hot as normal or take a good while to heat up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

Yep it is. Except I'm not looking for a hair dryer :)

Your opening post mentions you are looking for a hair dryer as well as a straightener...

I can tell you that dual voltage works fine. I have been to the US/Canada about 10 times and my dual voltage products have always worked perfectly, as here in Ireland. I have used cheap and expensive brands and they are always perfect. Dual voltage is exactly what will fix your problem at a good price.

If you really wish to avoid all the more logical options, I would use ebay to purchase a US straightener. May slip through the tax net and less shipping restrictions normally.

I've already stated I have reasons that the 'logical' options won't work. Yet nearly every initial post disregarded this, which was obviously irritating.

I've had some great responses since then and just picked one up on adverts there.

    Thanks all who helped!

Except you didn't state why they didn't work. You ignored every question I asked and other posters asked. I'm glad you got something sorted but next time you start a thread think about what replies you want and don't get huffy with people when they answer.
    Enjoy your trip.

    Eh, why should I?

I wanted an answer to a specific question. If I wanted a different answer, I'd have asked a different question.

Be careful on that high horse, I'd say it's a long way down.

Just in case anyone else is wondering, amazon.com would have worked. Hair straighteners are electrical rather than electronics and Amazon do ship them abroad.

Must be something wrong with me, my worldwide voltage straighteners worked fine in the states, but they're obviously not good enough for the op.

Can people please relax. I've never had such a bitchy response to a thread. I won't be posting in this forum again that's for sure.
I'm sorted now, thanks to the helpful poster who suggested adverts.ie

    Adios.
