Step up from Mondeo

I have a mk3 Mondeo, it's competent but now that I'm driving all over the country I'd like something a bit more refined. It's a comfortable car but very noisy at speed and the 1.8 needs to be worked hard. Just from looking online I've been considering seeking out Passats, older shape 3 Series touring, Octavia's, Peugeot 407's, Volvo V50.

Main requirements are comfort, motorway performance, carrying capacity and diesel. Budget would be a 6k. Any experience of the above/recommendations?

If comfort is top of your list you can forget about a 6k diesel Octavia. The Passat is probably the best of what you've suggested.

What about a MK4 Mondeo. It's possible to get an early one for €6k

I could well be wrong but I would have thought an Octavia and Passat would have very similar comfort?

Octavia isn't in the same ball park, petrol or diesel. You'd know it's a small car bodied as a big one.

Newer Mondeo would fit the bill but if you want a diesel it would probably be leggy for a good 2 litre one.

No, There's no comparison the two cars are on completely different platforms. I like the octavia but if my driving changed to longer journeys it would get very tiresome very quickly.
