Commerce or Computer Science? Advice!?!

    Hi there,

It has been a long while since I've been on boards! :)

I am in the middle of doing my leaving cert and I am in a bit of tricky situation. I can't make my mind up between doing either computer science or commerce! That is after spending since 4th year trying to figure it out. I feel like it is just going to be a big gamble either way and I won't know if I made the right choice until far into the future, which doesn't really seem fair.
I know my first choice will be computer science and business in Trinity ( as that is the only combo course ) but what comes after that has me puzzled.

My interest for computer science stems from my love for science and technology and my desire to make creative ideas come alive through computers. However I fear that when I get down to the technical bits, I may end up hating it. I also fear getting some boring technical job that focuses on difficult and uninspiring aspects of the sector.

On the other hand my interest for business stems from my enthusiasm in dealing with people, learning how the world around us works and from my desire to express creativity ( or aid some one else's creativity ) through the running of a business. My fear is how general society seems to go on as if business is a useless degree and that I will be left jobless unless I am thoroughly special. And that even if I manage to land a job it will be for terrible pay and horrific hours.

If you have read this far thank you! I know it is a lot but with time running out for the CAO I need to try and figure it out. If you are doing either of these degrees or are already in the field I'd love if you could give your own opinion on the topic.

    Thanks :)

p.s ( Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I wasn't sure. Feel free to move it if it is )

Do computer science. You can always start a business in it - and you'll have a much better understanding of what the techies are doing! Really you pick up a lot of business on the way.

Harder the other way round though.

P.S. If you'd said you wanted to do computer science "for the money" my advice would have been different.

A business degree isn't useless. This can be seen by the pile of employers that flood to Quinn school every year looking for Commerce graduates. I was in a similar situation myself when in school, have you tried to pick up any elements of Computer Science? When I was in 5th and 6th year I tried to learn 2-3 different programming languages and hated them all so I was able to quickly determine computer science wasn't for me.

Once I found out I didn't like the idea of programming I chose Commerce. This worked out quite well for me as in final year Commerce you can specialise in Management Information Systems which is a combination of technology orientated and analytics modules for solving business problems. For whatever route you choose, you can do a masters after in the other area if you'd like. There's a MSc in Computer Science for non-CS undergrads, while due to the analytical and quantitative elements of CS you can do several masters in Smurfit School (the graduate business school) such as the Masters in Management, Finance, Analytics, iBusiness etc.
