Hi, so I was wondering if it was possible to insure a car under someone else's name like one of my parents. Cause if I had insurance that allowed me to drive other cars and say the car was registered under my parent's name, would it work? Is it possible?

A car can be insured open drive where anyone with a full licence can drive it, this is normally restricted to drivers 25 years and older.

if a car is insured in another persons name (fronting) only that person gets the driving of other cars extension, if at all

My insurance has third party extension, so if i buy another car and register it in someone else's name, I'm in the clear. I generally use it to move a car that I've bought long distances.
However don't take the piss with it, they're not thick. They'll know something is up when a 50 year old woman suddenly has a horn for an evo :pac:

What exactly is it you're trying to do? Have third party extension, which allows you to drive any car that you don't own, so long as it meets the conditions of the policy, or get cheap insurance?
I'm with liberty, I've had third party extension from when I got my licence four three years ago.

    Aren't we all.

Unfortunately there are only 2 ways to do this and your looking at the wrong way. The only way to get cheap insurance is building up your NCD. Insurance companies aren't stupid they are well aware of the scams. The only way to drive a decent car is build up an NCD and then pay. If you want cheap insurance don't buy anything our insurance industry considers performance, if you want performance you have to pay.

Out of curiosity what car and what age are you and ncb?
Theres plenty of powerful cars out there that insurers don't attach a massive loading onto, if its not popular among young lads and you've 2 or 3 years ncb you'd be surprised what you can get decent insurance on.

I'm 20 and I'm only recently started to look into insurance and stuff. As far as cars no idea what to get quite I've some cars in mind though. But if you have any suggestions I'd be more than happy to know

The last two policies I've read have had sizable sections covering exactly the tactic you seem to be aiming for (Having someone with a decent insurance history pretend to own your car and insure it for you). Long story short, if you rack up enough of a claim to be worth investigating and they find that you are using the car more than the alleged owner, then your cover is invalid and they say they'll be claiming back from you.

Keep in mind as well, the "drive any car" 3rd party extensions only count if that other car is insured and owned by someone else.

It doesn't mention the need for the car to be insured anywhere in my policy. While it might in yours it doesn't in all.

This is true. 4/5 doors and even estate cars usually are cheaper to insure. The likes of a Toyota Caldina 2l Turbo 4x4 would be cheaper to insure than a Celica GTFour despite having the same engine and running gear.
