I got a call a few days ago that I have a interview for a part time job as a retail assistant in a high street store early next week. The person on the phone stated that it would be a group interview. Now I havnt done a group interview before and am wondering if people have any advice/common pitfalls to avoid thanks.

Don't curse, don't make rude jokes or say off key story's. Don't be overtly loud or boisterous. When given tasks to do, be positive and eager. The point of these exercises is to have you relax in a group and let your guard down.

I did one of these for M&S for part time Christmas work years ago. We had a group task to do (about 8 of us). Can't remember what we had to do - something about organising a staff party. The task is irrelevant though - it's just to see how you interact in a group. Everyone else was silent so I took control and starting making up lists and getting input from others. Two people in the group never opened their mouths.

Second task was solo. We were given a booklet of clothes, jewellry, shoes etc that the shop sold and 5 mins to study it. Then a 'customer' came in asking for a type of outfit. We were supposed to suggest stuff from the booklet and accessorise it. They're testing your memory of the stock, your coordination of outfits, upselling techniques and customer engagement.
