I want to buy a car that has been out of tax for a while. If I buy it can I get tax on it straight away if the seller gives me the log book?
Or would I have to pay for the over due tax on it doing this?
I don't know if the car was signed off the road or not.

Yes, in a similar position, buying off a friend, i rang tax office yesterday and they said you can change ownership and tax at the same time in the office.

You won't have to pay any arrears, you're only liable from the month in which you buy the car. Any off road declaration made by the previous owner is cancelled when you sign the VLC/VRC; if you want to drive it you'll have to tax it, or you have 10 days from purchase to declare it off the road.

So just take the signed tax book to the tax office and they will give me a tax disk straight away?

I want to put the car on the road straight away but want it taxed straight away.

That's what they told me on the phone anyway, going in to do it on monday.

You just need your policy number for tax form and that's it apparently.

Actually does anyone know whether you need to bring your insurance documents in to the tax office? or will the policy number suffice.
