Getting to Memmingen airport

    Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of advice about travel from Munich to Memmingen airport (Ryanair flies there, 'Munich-west'). I know there is the Allgäu-Airport-Express bus, which I plan to use to get from the airport to Munich when I arrive. But for the way back, the timing is a little bit tight as it's scheduled to arrive 1hr 20mins before the flight leaves. I'd normally always arrive 2hrs before the departure time and I'd be worried about additional delays (traffic etc). The only other bus would get there about 4 and half hours early though, which is the other extreme  But I know they arrange these times around the flights though, so maybe it's actually fine?? Anyone any experience of this?

I'm looking into other options too though and there is the train to memmingen and then a short bus trip to the airport, and the train is at a much reasonable time (still before 9am though, so don't qualify for bayern ticket before anyone suggests it :P).

But I'm wondering though if I'd need to book the train ahead of time? I might prefer to get advice from a tourist office when I'm over there, so am reluctant to book ahead if I don't need to. And maybe this is a stupid question, but could I get the ticket ahead of time in the station itself if I decide that's the best option when I'm over there? (only ever booked in advance online or bought a ticket on the day at a station!) Also, anyone know if the local buses in Memmingen are reliable?

    Thanks :)

Hi, I used the bus last year and arrived at the airport at 1.10pm for a flight at 2.35 and was sitting around at the gate for nearly an hour after going through security. Its a tiny airport.

The buses run to the flight schedules so they do take into account the time needed to check in when planning the departures from Munich. I wouldn't stress too much about getting to the airport really early. Enjoy Munich, its a great city.

Thanks HM! Sorry I probably should've mentioned that we'll be checking a bag too, so that would add some extra time before going through security :P I suppose I'm just worrying in case there is traffic etc that we'd arrive later than scheduled and it's already a bit tight for time, but maybe I'm worrying too much.

the busses are timed to be in plenty of time for the few ryanair flights that leave the airport each day. Also, the timetable you are looking at may not be the right one, as the timetables are adjusted to reflect the actual flight schedule of the ryanair flights that day - which can change from month to month or even week to week.
Go read the blurb on the bus website to reassure yourself.

your best bet is to take the bus and to soothe your nerves make sure your travel insurance covers you for missing a connection due to public transport issues so an alternative flight would cost you nothing should something really unexpected happen.

no need to book a train in advance if you choose to go that way. will need to get a taxi from the train to the airport though. about 10 euro I think.
