Yip called into Currys and found out it's the display model in Limerick only that's sold at that price (girl in Liffey Valley confirmed that); for anyone that's looking for a tripod the price is a definite steal so if you're nearby go and check'er out.

Just after calling into the Limerick store @ Parkway. The guy behind the counter confirmed it was a display model only and it was sold a couple of hours ago.

I got a Velbon DF-51 tripod for €32.99 a few weeks ago and have to say it's fantastic.

They're availbile in Currys and Argos

I picked up a manfrotto monopod mmc3-01 for €12.97 in currys limerick (both stores) over the weekend so keep an eye out.

the store at the parkway were also re-pricing some of the tripods too, but I didn't have time to wait and see

Excuse my ignorance, but what makes one of these better than a lidl special? They all have 3-axis heads, and 3 telescopic legs, so what's the deal with it?

Manfrotto are one of the world leaders in tripods.

If something goes on a manfrotto afaik you can get it fixed... I don't own one yet but i will someday. I have a great calumet tripod that was great value, but one of the lower clamps on leg broke and no replacement. I,also realised how, important it is to have quality fittings if you shoot at beaches, things rust quick in Ireland...

Build quality, and materials used. Aluminium, steel, carbon fibre ? Head gears. I'm not familiar with a Lidl special specifically, but I would imagine that the head may be "jerky" when moving in fine increments, and it will "creep" downwards when there's a camera and heavy lens on the head. It will be light, and so unstable in wind (or even breeze). A Manfrotto will allow you to hang your camera bag on it to increase weight, and therefore stability, but will not splay or damage the legs like a cheaper unit with lightweight aluminium legs. The cheaper tripod won't allow the legs to be set out to almost 90 degrees from the head, effectively allowing you to set your camera up almost on the ground, but still be able to pan and tilt.

For serious tripods, very often the tripod and head are bought separately, so you choose the tripod most suited to your requirements and budget, and the head most suited to your requirements and budget and then mix and match them. Tripods and heads can be very expensive, and to be fair, it can be very difficult to justify the higher end of the ranges, but the difference between a €30 and a €130 unit will be huge. Difference between a €130 and a €1,300 unit will need specific requirements to justify.

If the tripod will be used infrequently, with a relatively lightweight camera and lens, in undemanding conditions, the Lidl special type will be quite adequate. They definately serve a purpose, and I wouldn't be too disparaging about them.
