Hypothetical NCT scenario

Say you fail on a bald front tyre and are required to have a visual retest. They only recheck the specific items listed and no others, right?

So what's to stop you coming back an hour later having swapped the bald tyre with an ok rear tyre? Or even just swapping it with the other front tyre?

I would guess they check all tyres again?

    Not in my experience.

As far as I know if they see something during the retest that renders the car unroadworthy then they can fail it, even if it was not a fail originally. If you swap the front and back tires around then there is a fair chance that the tester is going to notice.

That's what I'm wondering about. Is there a set procedure, or does it depend on the individual?

I just saw a guy check only the relevant tyre, and not even glance at the others.

Hypothetical or not, it would be a bloody stupid thing to do. A fresh piece of paper on your windscreen will do sweet FA to help with stopping your car in an emergency.

I failed on a single tyre before. Got a new one went back for the visual and noticed the guy check all four tyres. I would say it depends on the individual.

I think when it comes to retests, it has to be a fail dangerous item that would be spotted to allow them to fail a different item.
Seeing as they allow cars drive away everyday with tyres that fail the test, I don't believe a tyre is categorised as fail dangerous so in my opinion, swapping the tyres around should work.
Very very stupid thing to be doing but I could see an argument for it in the case of someone simply avoiding the hassle of having to go away and come back and taking a day off work so they might get the cert this way then buy tyres at first opportunity.

Failed my nct on bald rear tires once, got new ones, did retest, guy check all four tires.
And rightly so and I bet there would be enough flim flam artists on this green isle who would rather argue for an hour and spend two weeks appealing than just fork out for fresh rubber. May they win their case and end up upside down in a ditch.
