Dental Question - Abscess??

Hi, I noticed a few days ago that I have a large lump in my gum under my tooth so I went to see the dentist about it. The lump is large, very hard but not sore. The dentist wasn't too sure what it was - first she said it may just have been the way the gum always was & I just never noticed before but I know it definitely isn't as I would often get mouth ulcers so would definitely have noticed it! The lump had also got bigger since the day I had noticed it.

She did an x-ray & said that it looks like the tooth may have an abscess but she was still unsure of what she was dealing with & would have to refer me to a specialist. She then said 'if it is an abscess then it's a chronic abscess because it's massive!!' It will take about 2 weeks for me to get the appointment with the specialist which is a bit annoying as I am afraid that the pain might start any day now!!

I also did what I always tell people not to & I googled about it & seen some of the symptoms of an abscess & some of them I had that night after the dentist appointment - feeling very unwell all through the night, dizzy, sweating & shivering, severe sore throat & feeling nauseous.

Does anyone know what this might be and also how much will a specialist charge for this as I am so afraid I'm going to get a huge bill!!! :(

    Thanks!

    Many possibilities here

most likely is an infection related to a dead tooth
    or
a cyst related to a dead tooth that has become infected

If the tooth can be saved, then a root canal treatment with or often without removing the cystic area is needed, depending on the tooth you would be looking at 300-800ish or so for a root canal.....

If the tooth can't be saved then its an extraction with/without removal of the cystic area. depending on the tooth and having medical insurance you could be looking at 300-600 ish....

What specialist are you talking about?? A root canal specialist or an oral surgeon??

I would say it is related to some problem with a dead tooth most likely an infection.

I have no idea what kind of specialist, they just took my number & said the specialist would call me in a few days about an appointment! It is also a molar tooth so I know that will cost more & I literally cannot afford it!! :( I had a root canal done last year on a pre-molar tooth on the other side so I hate having to go through it again! :(

im 99% sure this is an abscess
im not a dentist but ive had one before, it didnt pain for 1-2 months,
the pain got so bad i freaked out, sorry i dont mean to scare you but its the truth,
i went to a dentist and they said they couldnt pop it and gave me medicine,
    mine went away soon after,
my advice: go to a dentist try find out what it is and get medicine :)

Very few things in dentistry are cured with tablets. They merely cleared he infection and pain for enough time to remove the tooth or do the root canal... Sounds like you need another appointment too...!!!
