Applying For Seperate Positions In The Same Company

    What are people's views on the following:

    I'm in a job currently that is OK for now - but it's not heading in the direction I'd ideally like to be going in long term. I took it as I was made redundant in my last job and ran out of other options.

    Now, I keep my eyes and ears open for new jobs advertised in the field I would like to be in (and am studying to be in).

    I have just today seen a job which is more or less the same as what I was working at previously - only in a more senior position, with a well known & good company.

    However, just 2 days ago I had submitted my CV to the same well known, good company, for a different position - which at the time looked like a decent opportunity, but now is not as suitable for me as the job I saw today!

    The problem is that it's the same person in their HR dept. who I have to send my CV to. I personally think it would look like I was just firing out CVs all over the place if they received my CV twice in the same week for 2 different jobs....

    What would you make of this as a recruiter?

    Something similar happened to me previously: When made redundant from my last job I sent out a lot of CVs. I had a contact in another company who said they would put in a good word, but asked which position I was after (as they had 2 advertised). I stupidly replied "either one", and never heard back from them.

    If the HR person has already responded to your application:
    Email the HR person directly, without a CV, explaining that you had applied for position X, but you've seen that position Y has just come up which you think would be a much better fit for your skills, so you would like to be considered for that position instead.

    If they haven't replied:
    Send in the application as a brand new application but mention the above in your cover letter.

    It certainly wouldn't be rare for a company to interview a person for one job and offer them another. Rough rule of thumb is to apply for the most senior position you think is appropriate. If there are junior roles in the same area that they think would fit you, they will offer them to you.

    They haven't responded yet to my first application.

    Thanks for the advice - I'll have a think about it and decide on what to do.
