Girlfriend returning to Ireland day before/day of Visa expiry

My girlfriend is from outside the EU and living here right now. I'm booking a surprise trip to somewhere in the EU for us both and it has to be around 20th-23rd June.

Her visa expires on 23rd June (or the day after, I don't know precisely and can't ask her without giving away what I'm at. So don't just suggest that I ask that, I already thought of it)

Will there be any issue with returning on 23rd June? I'm guessing probably.

Would there be an issue with returning on 22nd June if they look at the visa and say "why are you coming back to a country that you technically have to be gone from by tomorrow?"*

*technically she's allow to overstay the visa by 1 month so can stay til 23rd July, but can't be travelling to/from the country within that month. I don't know if the immigration people or whoever will be understanding of that though.

The later into 22nd/23rd June I can book these flights, the better. It's awkward pushing it back to 18th + 19th etc because of both our jobs. Any info on how it's going to work is appreciated. I don't want to get her in trouble with immigration when we come back too late / don't want to make travel bookings we can't use in the end.
    Cheers

If I were you I wouldn't chance booking anything outside ROI & would book a surprise break in an Irish hotel

Apart from the fact that, even though well meant, she might not appreciate the unnecessary worry/stress of being put in that position the likelihood is that she may run into probems on her return e.g. being asked for proof that she plans to leave within her leave to remain period in the form of a confirmed flight ticket.

The last thing you need to do is jeopardise any future plans that she may have as regards returning on a more permanent basis. Little things like this have a nasty habit of biting back further down the line & personally I don't think it's worth it, especially when it can be completely avoided.

I already pretty much know she wants me to do what I'm doing actually, via blatant hints dropped.

Thanks for the steer but the reason I posted this thread in the first place is because I'm not going to let anything happen that messes with her visa, so you're preaching to the choir.

I was looking for cold hard info on the mechanics of travelling to/from the country in and around visa expiry date.
