VRT on LGV

Finding an answer to this is similar to finding the answer to the meaning of life!

I'm looking at bringing in a Citroen Berlingo and am trying to find out what the VRT will be on it as I know the rates changed in 2011. Rang 5 different offices in Revenue this morning, none of which could give me an answer.

    The website states

Category N1 - a vehicle that, at all stages of manufacture, is classified as a category N1 vehicle with less than 4 seats, and has, at any stage of manufacture, a technically permissible maximum laden mass weight that is greater than 130 per cent of the mass in service of the vehicle with bodywork in running order.

To me that's an leaving cert honours maths question!! How the hell do you calculate that?

I found an old thread about defenders and the formula looked to be (Gross Weight + Gross Payload) / Gross Weight x 100 = Maximum Laden Weight.. If that figure is higher than 130 it's Cat C vrt which is €200. Is that correct??

What I have calculated is (1930 + 625)/1930x100=132.38 so it should be a Cat C.

I should have paid more attention in school ;)

just go on the www.ros.ie website and put in the van details in the vrt commercial section and it will give you the amount payable

That doesn't work, it doesn't list vans properly and the omsp for any van I could find was set at €25,000. That's from a basic spec citroen nemo to a top spec ford tranist, even if u look for a van over 3.5t which has a vrt of €200 it still bases the vrt at 13.3%.. I've concluded that the VRT should be €200, will find out soon enough!

My cousin brought in a 1999 Berlingo and it cost €125 vrt and a friend brought in a 2008 Ford Transit and it cost €200. Hope this helps

just wondering do you intend buying new as I did a vrt on a 07 belingo and it gave me a figure, presuming you are in business to need a van why not ring your accountant for the definite answer, even claiming uk vat back etc makes it more of an issue and if you are not vat regd or a farmer its not that easy to tax it commercially now

It's still a flat fee, albeit 200 now as opposed to the old rate of 50 euros, you'll need some paperwork on the van, and a form which you can down load from the NCT site, a photo Id and utility bill, bring all with you to the test centre.
You will also have to prebook online...

200 Euro to register a LGV. You will also have to get it tested and weighed.

A bit off topic but a guy at work imported a high sped 2009 VW Passet. The revenue calculator said €2700. He produced the car at his local VRT office and the lady said that €2700 appeared very high and sent the case off for a manual quote. Yesterday he got the decision and it was €3050 which is also wrong but to appeal the case he must first pay €3050 and then argue his case. Crazy !!!
