Internal cable routing options

I've already got one frame with internal cable routing. The set up isn't too dissimilar to a traditional frame, i.e. the holes where the cable enters the frame act as cable stops and you cut lengths of housing to stop at this point.

However, I've recently come across some frames that seem to be set up to take housing right the way through the frame.

My question is, where do you get the housing. I reckon most cable kits from Shimano and Campag etc won't have lengths of housing long enough. So do you have to buy bulk rolls of housing?

Jagwire do kits in normal and extra long and to be honest even the normal lengths are enough. You don't normally run the gear cables all the way. It's generally just the back brake that is run through.

I just did mine yesterday. Took longer than I planned to put it mildly I might swap the rear brake cable though as it rattles off the inside of the top tube. I have some old frame stops and not running the housing through will be better.

What does the housing stop up against if you don't run it all the way?

A lot of places sell it by the meter eg. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/goodridge-gear-cable-outer/rp-prod23398

My previous frame came with plastic stops with a long nose. My new one just has plastic grippers that are **** and don't hold the cable tight and slip into the frame when I change cables. I'm still trying to find the original type for sale somewhere!

I'm talking about frames that are designed for the housing to run right through, i.e. the cable grommets are there to guide the cable into the frame, not stop it.

That's what I have currently. It's easy to swap out the grommets for proper cable stops and not run the housing full length if only it were possible to find the stops anywhere!
I have full length rear brake housing going through my top tube and it rattles on the rubbish surfaces of most roads. I'm going to go back to no housing if I can find my old stops as it's driving me crazy.
Let me know if you can find any cable stops. On bike24.de you can buy shimano housing in loads of colours and lengths

Is there a standard size for frame drillings that allows you to swap grommets like that?

There is for brake holes. Di2 frames have different size gear holes though to mechanical.

I found the bits needed on the Jagwire site,

    http://jagwire.com/products/v/Stoppers_Loop_Guides

If the frame holes are too large for the housing then use the single beveled edge pieces and run the housing all the way through, but watch out for rattles!

Alternatively, finish the housing at the frame and use the cable guide stoppers as the end pieces where the housing ends at the frame holes.

    Sorted.

What are you going to do with those parts, push them into the grommets?

Into the frame holes and the bare cable goes in the other end. If your frame already has rubber or plastic surrounds to the frame holes then you don't need them. You'll know by the size of the opening if you are expected to run the cable all the way through or not.
