How is it safe?

I include pedestrians in this but I don't see how cyclists think it is safe to travel 2 wide on a road that has no hard shoulder. I just think its so stupid and cyclists show such disrespect for their own safety. I know there are high fatality figures but I I'm surprised it's not higher to be honest.

Ah LadyLucinda those pedestrians and cyclists are all crazy. Cycling and walking on roads where the cars and yokes do be travelling at high speed in all directions and some of them not even wearing hi vis and helmets. We're doomed LadyLucinda doomed. They are everywhere now since that bike to work scheme. Bloody government giving out free bikes and they don't even pay road tax.
That should cover all the usual angles!

Cyclists often single file to let motorists through but there is no safety imperative to do so, cycling two abreast is their perogitive. To be dealt with by motorists as a tractor or other obstacles. The only safety concern is when wanker drivers cannot wait for a safe opportunity to overtake.

I'm not trying to stir the pot but I think its dangerous enough to hop in a car in the morning. I for one would most definitely not feel safe on a bicycle on a main road. Go cycle or walk on a bog road, around a field or on a foot path but not where there are cars are doing 100km an hour. your putting your life in other peoples hands. Its just beyond me why people think its acceptable. I just want to hear what argument cyclists and pedestrians have.

    Interesting topic there Lucinda!

I don't believe it's been covered before. Don't know how that one slipped through the net!

Did you try the auld search function at all? Just to be sure?

Looked on the cyclist thread but no sign of anything. Presume it has been fiercely debated already

There's nothing to 'debate' as such. But yes. It has been covered. Again. And again. And again.

I'd advise you post something along the lines of 'oh. Whoops. I've just re-read my opening post. I now realise the premise was daft. I withdraw my remark in embarrassment'.

    Something like that.

Unless.... No.... Wait.... It's coming to me......

Oh yeah! Roads! They're for cars, right? Just cars!

I won't lie, It annoys me to see cyclists on the road. The reason it annoys me is because I am worried for their safety and would not like to see another human being injured or killed. If there is a hard shoulder to cycle in, that's fair enough, if motorists are made aware that there is cyclists are ahead then this is perfectly fine also.

However without either of these I would go as far to say as that two people who travel two wide on a road with no hard shoulder have not much respect for their own safety and it is selfish on their families putting their lives in the hands of drivers.

Clearly you don't worry enough if something like this annoys you.

The points you are making are too stupid to try and even respond to.

Actually, lucinda makes a valid point. Just not from the right angle. Big nasty cars should go and drive in a field, or park safely on a hard shoulder, so they don't bump into poor vulnerable squishy cyclists.

New thread lucinda. Post the above over on the motors forum. They deserve a giggle too!

    We should ban cars.

Tens of thousands of miles up so far. Not a single serious injury. Very fit.

    Thanks for your concern.

explain how they are showing disrespect for their own safety. In fact by not knowing and understanding the rules of the road and road traffic acts and the reasons behind them it is you as a motorist (or other road user) who is showing disrespect* to them.
    * and from your general tone I don't think it would be unreasonable to say 'utter contempt'.
I know there are high fatality figures but I I'm surprised it's not higher to be honest.
you should show us all these high figures you're claiming because in the real world they are actually very very low.

maybe we should get rid of all the motorists and then the roads will be super safe for pedestrians, cyclists and horseriders :)

You seem like just another one of those "it's ok to discrimitate against cyclists" type who don't want to know about the rules and laws.

If you are worried about safety you really should stop driving and start cycling or walking, it's far safer and no nasty emissions damaging the environment & health of those around you either.

    Lucinda,

If a driver is so incompetent that he or she cannot cope with observing cyclists and pedestrians when there is no hard shoulder then they should not be on the road. Cycling two abreast improves safety against bad drivers who attempt unsafe overtakes.

It is a criminal offence to cycle on footpaths.

Oh look, it's one of those "Why can't cyclists..." threads on Boards. Will I:

A.) Report it and let the mods deal with it
B.) Poke the OP with a stick?

    I reckon I'll go for B.
