Red car turning pink!

I have a red car that is getting on in the years(00), it's still uber reliable and a fantastic run around the only thing that I don't like about it is the lacquer has started to peel off on the roof and the bonnet of the car over the last couple of years. There are now a few decent sized spots and it makes the car look really shabby. Anyway to fix this? I assume a full respray would be in order? Anything at all I can do that wouldn't be too costly?

Well if its an Avensis simply bring it back to Toyota and they'll give you a full re-spray for free ! I'm guessing its probably a VW or a Corsa?

I think it was 04-07 Avensis models recalled for the respray?

I think it might have been. I remember seeing an article about it but can't recall exactly how it worked out. I know someone who asked about a 01 and he was told where to go.

and those mk2 avensis were only repainted in cases where the laquer had peeled and not for paint fading.

Edit: just read about the peeling laquer. In any case they wont repaint an 01

You should really try Meguires Ultimate Compound, have used it on a few cars with great results. Basically takes a layer of top paint off leaving what looks like new paint underneath. Bit of elbow grease and thats all. Can use electric buffer if ya have one but not necessary.

Not a Corsa guys, VW Polo, I know feck all about bodywork so will be googling you guys answers. Wouldn't be bothered with wrapping it, it would't be worth it.

Do not use sandpaper on a car where the lacquer has peeled off. I'm amazed that people are actually suggesting that! What'll you be left with if you start sanding THE PAINT???....primer and then metal!

The only way to solve the issue of peeling lacquer is to have the whole panel resprayed. Anything else is a waste of time. T-Cut is the Irish motorist's answer to everything. It's not going to bring your lacquer back.

Thanks, I didn't think it would be that easy, otherwise all the other late 90's/early 00 pink cars wouldn't be out there. Is there anything atleast I could use to make the undercoat less pink so it would blend in a bit better with the rest of the car? Never buying a red car again.

Take it to a pro, or at least take photos for feck's sake. How can anyone give a decent opinion from a couple lines of text?

Just go to your local valeter and ask him to do his/her best with a machine buff and polish, should take off a bit of oxidisation off anyway.....

If the paint has oxidised under the lacquer, you can polish for hours and you still won't make it redder, as all you are doing is removing the scratches from the lacquer.

I think that the issue with these cars is that the lacquer has peeled off in patches.
