Pelletstown Workhouse, Navan Road - info?

I am interested to see if anybody has any information on Pelletstown workhouse in the early 1900s. The workhouse was an auxiliary unit of the South Dublin Union Workhouse (James' Street) and was located on the site currently occupied by the Kempton housing estate beside the Half-Way House pub at Ashtown on the Navan Road. I think the workhouse was converted into St Patricks mother and baby home when the workhouse closed down.
I believe my grandfather may have been put in the workhouse sometime around 1910 along with his elder brother after their mother passed away. They lived in North Gloucester Place when my great-grandmother died.

You should check if either Dublin City Archive (Pearse St library) or the South County Dublin archive has records.

Thank you pinkypinky and CeannRua. I am working my way diligently through the South Dublin Union Workhouse Indoor Registers and Minutes at the National Archives - a few more days should finish this off. I have identified one ancestor already who was present for a number of months in 1909 due to an illness.

This Workhouse data seems like a prime candidate for a digitisation/transcription project as it contains a lot of useful information - the registers themselves include: date admitted, link to prior/related admittance, name, residence prior to admission, sex, age, marital status, employment/calling, religion, spouse/sibling details if relevant and observations on condition when admitted. In addition to the registers, the weekly minuted Masters reports provide a journalistic account of some 'notable' events at the workhouse.

I would be really interested in any descriptive/historical/photographic data on the Pelletstown establishment itself.

Thanks for that Kildare Fan. I had come across most of it but the photo is interesting. I'm not sure whether this is the Mother & Baby home or the Workhouse or whether they were one and the same.

This home was closed in 1985 and the location is now known as Kempton. Baptismal records for the Home should be found in Chapelizod Parish up to 1955, and thereafter in Navan Road Parish, which was constituted from Chapelizod in that year. Parish details available from Archdiocese of Dublin website.
