Rent Allowance-stop claiming?

Asking this on behalf of a friend.
She and her partner are on Rent Allowance. They have been on the Housing List for five years and they've got two children.

They've had the opportunity to live in a relative's house, rent free for a while, and they've said they're going to stop claiming rent allowance.

Am I right in thinking this will affect their Housing List situation?
I thought in order to remain on the List you had to claim RA?
If anyone can shed any light on the matter, it'd be great.

Is this the council housing list? If so then you should not loose your place on the list for not claiming RA, you can be on the list even if working and below certain income thresholds. The best bet would be to ring their local housing authority and find out.

They don't need to be on RA to be on the housing list. I am on the list and living at home. As to coming off RA I am not sure they should ring the housing dept for clarification but I don't think their housing claim should be affected

People on the housing list live at home with their parents, they live in private rented with or without rent allowance depending on their income, it makes no difference to their eligibility for or position on the housing list.
