Colour / Paint / Dye - Leather Shoes

Hope this is the right place to ask

I need to get some colour into an old pair of leather golf shoes. It's for fancy dress and doesn't need to last more than a few wears, but I will be trudging through grass, probably mud and possibly rain, so don't want them running on me straight away.

I want it to be cheap and cheerful..

Can I just use the acrylic paint the kids have in their playroom? Would I need to treat the leather before and after?

I have seen some actual leather shoe paint but at €5+ a bottle it is going to be expensive as I was planning on a bit of a multicolour mess.
