Getting braces on top of crowns

I was just wondering if anybody has had this experience or has any advice.

Last year I got my two front teeth crowned (after a root canal had started to discolour one of them). I am really happy with the crowned teeth because the dentist changed the shape of the teeth so that they were not as long and he also moved them back so that they didn't stick out so much. I'm very happy with the job, although I still have to be careful because I know they won't last forever!

Anyway, my bottom set of teeth are another story. They came up crooked when I was younger and the dentists told my mother my teeth were still settling and would straighten by themselves (!!!). 20 years or so later and obviously they are a lot worse. There's one tooth too many, and I've been thinking about getting braces for the bottom teeth.

However, if I'm going to get braces for the bottom it got me thinking that perhaps I should get the top done too. They are fairly straight up there, although the two side teeth jut out a bit. Is it possible to get braces on top of crowns without damaging them? My dentist said that it would be possible, but after getting a root canal through one of my crowns a few months ago, I noticed he marked the tooth a bit. So would braces completely destroy them?

No braces can be applied to crowned teeth the same as normal teeth. The orthodontist just need to be careful when removing the brackets.

braces on crown is tricky but possible, there is a good chance that the facing on the crown will be damaged when the brackets come off at the end of the treatment
