Accidental damage insurance - is it worth it?

    Hi all,

I am on verge of buying a new bike and was going to join cycling ireland. While that comes with insurance it doesn't include accidental damage to bike. Is it worth taking out accidental damage cover or will insurance company do usual and try to get out of paying if they can. Anyone got any experience of needing to claim. I can't help think that if accident happens, say coming of bike and damaging frame I'll be told I was to blame/irresponsible and not be covered.

    Thanks

It's a toughie. I agonised over this when I got my current steed 4 years ago. I ended up saving my money by avoiding potholes! The fear of crashing, dropping, scraping the bike subsided after a few months of ownership (as did the daily polishing) and now I'm glad I have 4 years of potential insurance money in my pocket. This will go towards a replacement if I do come off, or a new bike if I don't.

It is unusual to seriously damage a bike whilst riding it, unless you are racing (which is usually excluded from insurance policies anyway).

Falling off a bike will usually result in minor scuffs/scratches and cheap replacement parts, e.g. derailleur hanger, handlebars.

If you collide with a large, heavy objects (e.g. bus, car) the bicycle damage will be the least of your problems. If someone else collides with you they'll be liable.

tldr: I wouldn't worry about it.

Would theft not be more important to insure against?

My race bike is either in my house or I am sitting on it, so theft is not a concern, crash damage racing however is a big concern, the crowd who offer a discount to CI members quoted me 150 yoyos a year for crash only damage with an insured bike value of €3000, not unreasonable.

    It would yes.

I've got the mtb and road bike specified under the house insurance for accidental damage outside the home and theft cost me 75 quid for the year on top of the house policy. For a new convert to carbon with not a lot of faith in its strength is nice to know it's covered if anything happens it.
