Did the bumper have to come off to replace the bulbs? Even so it still seems overpriced.

Did they sell her some headlight units with them bulbs? I'd love to hear their explanation.

Some bulbs are expensive and its best to replace in pairs (set)

It sounds like you were billed for bulbs and labour.

A cheap bulb can be got for 5 to 10 euro each
expensive bulbs can run 50 euro a set

Need to remove engine and gearbox units, reassembly is reverse of removal

JUST - THE - BULBS, not fitted, trying to stay calm here….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,278 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

My mistake, online bulbs companies suggest the car takes H7, not the case, this car has D1S bulbs, she was given 2 Xenon HID bulbs which I see are mad money. Was never even aware the car had HID's, not that white or bright. I take it you can't just put in H7's?

Are they made of pure gold?

    If not, return them asap.

Go in and order the same bulbs yourself. I'm going to assume that the price and receipts won't match up. Then politely ask for a refund on the first and hand back the bulbs.

A lot of newer cars require removal of front bumper and grill to get at the blub area..this is probably what they're charging for.

Why? That's reasonable for two Xenon bulbs fitted.

Just to clarify, I was under the impression the car took H7's, this one does not, its takes the far more expensive HID D1S bulbs. Seems the price is in line with other suppliers, and she just got the bulbs, they were not fitted.

Just amazed, as I said the cars headlights appear no different from normal bulbs, what a waste of money.

    Read.

Try reading 7 posts up from your above reply. They were Xenon bulbs.

Your name and shame was 3 posts after the OP clarifying they were Xenon.

I'd suggest you should read the thread more carefully.

€90 for a Xenon bulb is very good - think it was around double that for the replacement in the Wife's Volvo, but managed to get it covered under warranty :-)

In fairness i can spot the xenon bulbs in scenics and could tell the difference a mile away. Most people that are into cars would know they were xenon.

My other half didnt even know her E60 had xenon lights until i told her to stop sitting on the bonnet!

So can I, hence why I am incredulous, and can't wait to get home and take a look. If they are Xenon they are crap Xenon.

    No.

i know it was a renault before i read the OP - some of those have to be practically dismantled to change the bulbs - im sure thats what the garage will say - charged you for time involved no doubt.

edit - just saw it was for bulbs only - ignore
edit2 - thanks for that @testicle - ur a nice chap, @jonny24ie pointed it out in a much more pleasant way

Zurb as has been pointed out a few times on the thread, the price was only for the supply of bulbs, 90+ euro each. No labour involved.

    No.

Hi, could you post a pic of the head lamp? 90 for xenond is quite reasonable actually. Was quoted over 230 for a laguna:o

    No.

Something strange there. Someone didn't stick a HID kit in it before you bought it? If it was factory you should have headlight washers and the levelling switch should be blanked off. When you turn the lights on do they do a little dance up and down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭ltdslipdiff

Something strange indeed ! Its very unlikely that your Scenic has HID xenons factory fitted. If its a UK Initiale model there is a small chance it has them. Also, the 2009 -> Scenic is grand to change bulbs, its the earlier models that are a pain ! OP if you PM me your reg I can check and see what model it is. Its also unlikely your dealer has replaced non-factory fit HID bulb units for that price! The thick plottens!

You guys are are great, just home and had look from the front of the car. I'll be a monkey's uncle if they are HIDs, they look like boggo H7's to me! It is a UK car alright, but a Privilige model. I'll get a pic up tomorrow and hopefully we can put this to bed!

The newer Renaults from 2010 have sliding front light housing now. You can change the bulb in 2 minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,812 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Regardless of what the car has, Its pretty obvious at this stage that they sold you the xenon bulbs and as such the price was ok for a main dealer so they didnt scam you anyway. The issue now is whether or not they gave you the wrong part. If they did, they will refund. No major issue here only abit of hassle.
I was quoted 220 + vat for a D3S bulb for my audi from the dealer a few years back. Got a genuine philips replacement identical to factory fitted bulb for 60 online and there were other options at the time for half that.
The dealers have silly markup on these.

    Update:
It was a factor, not a dealer. In fairness to them they went by what was printed in the owners manual, there was no attempt to scam anyone, far from it, they did a very fair price on the Xenons. Having said that, given the cost of the bulbs it would have been no harm if they had just popped out to look at the car outside, would have saved a lot of hassle.

There has been no problem returning the Xenon bulbs and now have a couple of H7's ready to go in.

Which was a load of bull. If the 'mechanic' had followed the simple illustrations in the owner's manual he'd have had the bulb changed in less than 10 mins with all wheels still on the ground. But that wouldn't make sensational tv would it!

OP, better scribble out the HID bulb spec in your manual to avoid future confusion.

Did it need it, what mileage?

Did it need it, what mileage?

The car was sounding a bit vocal, rough, but it is a diesel after all! 40,000 miles so no harm in a good clean out, even though the car lives on the motorway. First impression are that it is running a bit smoother and is a more responsive, certainly can't see any downsides.

Was only €130 and the lads were great at explaining what they were doing.

My friend got his 08 jeep done 2 weeks ago, he went to main dealer and they were going to spend hours identifying why it was running badly. He says the difference is massive. Just asking as I have an 11 megane with 79,000kms.
